Phil is one of the few players you hope misses the green so we can watch him do his magic with the wedge. I cannot count the times I have seen him hit shots at tour events and I look at the guy next to me in the gallery and we shake our heads in amazement. He has kept the the San Diego Paul Runyon , Phil Rogers tradition of short game masters alive. Go Bolts.

would love to see Phil win another major. And another callaway staffer still playing the xforged ’13… Callaway re-release these clubs!!!!

For some of Royal Troon Old Course bunkers, the 64 is a real good play this week. Not so most weeks on PGAT.
Hey, wondering how Callaway staffers Mckelson and Old Tom Watson are getting along these days.

Phil always carries a 64° wedge

Hilarious. People questioning what he has in his bag. Dude shot a 63. Who friggin cares – it works for him. Guy would run circles around anyone here and you people know more than him about clubs. Whatever. Losers.

52 58 64 and then no need to grind the 56 60. takes some bounce off
david
Jul 14, 2016 at 6:58 pm
52 58 64 is my guess. reduces the bounce on the two stronger wedges and no need to grind like the 64.

I am not sure why so many people are criticizing or questioning one of the greatest players of all time. Who really cares what the reasoning is or the gap between his clubs. I gap mine closer together,,, so what… Do you question why Hank Aaron or Lou Garig didnt use pine tar? or why Joe theisman used a single bar face mask? Just enjoy what he can do with a golf club in his hand.

I would really like to have that putter. I wish they would release some special edition ones.
Oh, and very good advertising for the new irons. Obviously they work well

I doubt they had to pay him anything to swap it. I just replaced my old i20 that I thought would never leave the bag with that new apex hybrid. Definitely try them out if you have a chance to, phenomenal club.

Callaway must’ve dropped a few extra dollars to get that anser hybrid out the bag

Feb 15, 2016 at 6:16 pm
also on driver, lets see $499 for the “amature” public model of that driver, $1.50 for the lead tape…what $700 (if you could get one) for the tour van model of that driver, $1.50 for the lead tape….moral of the story, add $1.50 worth of lead tape and use your old driver another year….
Joey

Good christ that’s a lot of led tape on that wedge. Sheesh.

Loft is the trajectory the ball comes off the face, any good player knows that position of the ball in the stance and where your hands are positioned at impact to the ball can change the loft of the club. Which can play a factor in distance due to the trajectory of the shot, wind, and elevation. The clubs are just the tools that the player uses to place the ball where they want a good player knows how to use what they have in the bag. I’m sure Phil knows what he is doing. Golfing is not all about the clubs. Phil can hit a bunker shot with an open face 2 iron that would come out like a 64 degree wedge if he wanted. it’s mostly a mental game.

I would love to see a 2 iron hit like a 64 degree wedge and stop at the same place

Fahgdat,
It seems Dylan was making a bit of an exaggeration to express a point. People do this all the time, probably since the beginning of time.
So please stop making pointless attacks!

Is there a point to your post? Other than incorrectly defining loft & making incoherent statements about ball position and shaft lean, I can’t seem to find a basic premise. Phil can hit a bunker shot with an open faced 2 iron that would come out like a 64°? No, he can’t. Oh wait, my apologies, I failed to read the last sentence. His physical skills mean nothing for this particular shot, it’s his mental acuteness. If you want to hit a soft, butterfly landing with sore feet 2 iron out of a bunker, your Jedi mind game must be strong. Now I totally get it & believe he CAN hit this shot. Unless, of course, his 2 iron was a hybrid, which would make opening it and having the club head slide through the sand a bit more difficult, even for a Jedi. The next time you pull your keyboard up to Post, PLEASE STOP. There is nothing that you have written that was worth reading & the space that you used could have been filled with either something that made sense, or an advertisememt .

The problem with most amateurs is they can’t control distances. Just because you can hit a club a certain distance does not mean you can in every condition. You have to be able to take off and add distance when needed. People will say they are in between clubs. That should never happen to a good player. Justt swing easier or harder depending on distance, and conditions. How often do we have the perfect distance for any club. If we have to have the perfect distance on any shot then we are practically always between clubs. One more thing I notice frequently, most weekend golfers feel they must hit every shot 100% of their swing speed when they would play much better if they swung all clubs about 85 % maximum. Good ball strikers know when and how to hit a club different distances. Poor ball strikers prefer to see how far they can hit a club even though they may not hit it straight or catch it flush very often.

Good to see Phil using that putter, he always seems to putt better with the blade than the mallet looking putter, I hope he sticks with it.

Too many people on this forum get way too bent out of shape about gaps, seems like there is a new thread started every week on the topic. LOL Phil knows what clubs he needs and what shots he can hit. When putting wedges in your bag you should be more concerned about the shots you need to hit not perfect 4* gaps. Phil has all the shots you need to play at a high level. His loft gapping should be a lesson not a criticism.

big gap between a PW and a 56
Eric
Jan 24, 2016 at 10:02 pm
You don’t know what the PW loft is. He’s from the old school. It could be 49*. Tigers PW is 49
Jam
Jan 25, 2016 at 3:15 pm
Even so, that’s a big gap. Plus I feel like I’ve heard before that Phil’s irons are strong? Maybe not.

Jan 28, 2016 at 10:44 pm
A good player can lower or raise the loft of any club a few degrees by a simple swing adjustment.
Don
Jan 29, 2016 at 1:24 am
No they can’t, loft is built into the club. They can vary the distance but not by changing its loft.
shayne
Feb 13, 2016 at 7:58 pm
are you kidding me???? playing the ball back will reduce the effective loft of the club, more forward will have the opposite effect.
Rudeger
Feb 14, 2016 at 7:06 pm
Don is right. They can’t change the loft, but they can change the dynamic loft. Two totally different things. The loft is static but dynamic loft can vary.
prime21
Feb 21, 2016 at 7:58 am
I’m pretty sure you’re the one who is telling a joke?! Playing the ball back will potentially change the static loft, but the dynamic loft is determined at impact ONLY. Being that most amateurs dump the club, the dynamic loft increases at impact anyway, even if it is played back at address. I could play a ball way forward and make a hard shift to my front foot, effectively reducing my dynamic loft.
If you’re going to throw up multiple question marks in an attempt at embarrassing another with your “knowledge”, I would be sure that A. you know what you’re talking about & B. you’re right. Obviously, neither are the case here, so it’s probably best that you crawl back to the troll cave and take a nap.

Feb 13, 2016 at 9:58 pm
Phil’s 56* is bent stronger, closer to 52*, there’s no need to get this worked up about “the giant gap” in his lofts
