Best (golf) purchase of 2015?

With 2016 newly minted, it’s the time of the year to look back on 2015. And a significant element of the year for some of us was golf equipment purchases.

3_Putt_par kicked off the thread, volunteering that Nippon Steel Modus3 Tour 125 shafts were his best golf investment of the past year.

It’s a hot thread, and an interesting look at what some serious equipment purchasers valued most.

Gaming a driver that should be in a museum?

post-214021-0-01580900-1388340213_thumb

StuartRS started a thread centered around the question above. He indicated that he hasn’t played much golf in recent years, although he’ll be playing more in 2016.

Scanning his past posts on the forums he saw mentions of Cleveland Hi-Bores and Ping K15s and wondered if anyone was still gaming such “relics.”

In an environment of short product cycles and rapid perceived obsolescence, the ensuing discussion is an interesting one, with a few WRXers copping to gaming a driver more than five years old.

“Is the new stuff really any better, apart from being shiny?” StuartRS asks.

Great stories from the Tour

PGA Tour

Forum stalwart Forged4ever started a thread a few days ago devoted to the many colorful anecdotes in professional golf. Surely, it will be a gem.

Here’s his contribution.

“Back in the early days, the Tourney really was club affair, with Members Serving as Rules Officials and making rulings when necessary. So long time member Charlie Yates told the story of one year where there was a lot of pre-tourney rain, greatly softening the course.

“So Clifford Roberts, the autocratic dictatorial Chairman appointed Bob Jones’ Father, the “Colonel,” to go down to No. 11 and 12 because he thought that such rulings would be needed at those two holes.

“Shortly after, a player’s ball plugged near the pond on No. 12, it’s final resting spot begging the question of whether it was a hazard or was he to be granted relief.

“The Colonel, stymied by the situation, was chosen more due to his demeanor, carriage and authoritarian presence than his mastery of the rules of the game, studied the situation, paced off by himself, obviously pondering which rule to impart, and he turned, walked back to the player and asked him where he stood in the tournament.

“4-over for today and 17-over for the tournament sir,” the player replied.

“What difference does it make,” the Colonel chirped. “Go ahead and place the son of a b**** on the green if you’d like,” and he turned and walked back to his chair.”

Why Ludvig Aberg is my new favorite player – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing one of the new sensations in the world of golf – Ludvig Aberg. The 24-year-old finished solo second at the Masters a couple of weeks ago, and gained many plaudits, including from several WRXers.

One member, RoyalMustang, took to the forums to explain why Aberg is now their favorite player, saying:

“I loved the way the Ludvig was out there, having a great time, not taking himself or the situation too seriously. Even after the double at 11, he was like “well, that’s golf!” Loose and relaxed: that’s the way to play. It’s obvious he loves what he’s doing, he loves the big moments, and he loves being a part of it all.

Arnold Palmer was viewed that way. Just like Brooks Robinson was forever viewed as not just a great baseball player, but a great human being and friend to Baltimore.”

And our members have been reacting and sharing their positive takes on the young Swede.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • redfirebird08: “Ludvig has a great attitude, a great smile, and a great golf swing.”
  • otto6457: “I’m very lucky to have talked with Ludde several times at the Rawls Course at Texas Tech.  He’s a truly nice guy and very friendly.  Always said hello when we passed each other in the club house and was always smiling. Watching him hit balls on the range was a joy.  He has “that sound” and trajectory to die for.  There were many times he was out on the range in 30+ mph winds just hitting the most beautiful shots that just seemed to ignore the wind.  World class ball striker. And yes……..I am a fan boy.”
  • konklifer: “I like him. In an era of endless waggles and laboring, his swing and pace of play are a joy to watch.
