High school golf equipment you’d never see on Tour

Published

on

GolfWRX was live this week from the 2015 Kentucky High School Boys State Championship at Bowling Green Golf Club. If you haven’t seen the galleries, browse the links below:

It’s interesting to see what the top high school golfers — at least in the state of Kentucky — have in their bags. While some players have a standard setup, others have more eclectic bags you’d never see on the PGA Tour.

Check out the photos below that highlight equipment we saw in the Kentucky high school players’ bags that you wouldn’t find in a professional golfer’s bag on Tour.

What’s a sweet spot?

2b2633dd43b8fd6c0dede704beea2969TaylorMade RBZ irons, released in 2012, are “serious game-improvement irons” with big offset and fast, forgiving faces. They’re just about the opposite of forged blades made for workability and feel.

8107fbca0ecd5d2221d78f7a757b4642

The same goes for these Nike VRS Covert irons, as well.

#Pray4TedScott

3e5787f521e7a191fd4b5a08d38d93ac

A player would never allow his caddie to put his club in the bag with grass clippings all over the crown like this. And is that a TaylorMade R580xd?

572353f2b685ae405ac4b8687c4c1b2c

Also, a Tour player would never putt with a golf ball carrying that much mud, or putt with a putter that doesn’t have a logo on it. It’s (not) all about the Benjamins, baby (in high school).

Sky is the limit

7ededc55520ce6479ee34b0db487e6f7

You’d never see this many sky marks on the crown of a Tour players’ fairway wood, and you probably won’t see (what looks to be) a Titleist 975F fairway wood any longer, either.

It’s not the Aero, it’s the indian

7f02305824a6d5d8b7f194fbba17000d

These aren’t TaylorMade’s new AeroBurner irons, these are the TaylorMade Burner Plus irons released by the same company in 2011. Also, you definitely won’t find an Adams Speedline Fast 10 or MaxFli C3 fairway wood out on Tour.

Pullin’ up

23e4163385f5a346b14398a3c48eec51

Imagine seeing Jason Day strolling up to the 18th green at Whistling Straits… with a pull cart? I don’t think so.

Iron covers

414d64d04ef2b939dbf8660eb6746979

Simply put, if you want to look Tour, ditch the iron covers.

Callaway and Tiger stripes don’t mix

e02756312c3524d07aa99d24f8849d20

Here’s a photo you’d definitely never see on Tour. It’s an unwritten rule that Tiger Woods is the only Tour player allowed to have a Tiger head cover, and he’d never — well, probably never — play irons that don’t have a Swoosh on them.

But one thing that transcends every level of golf…

4586d8c35e2d82caef524422902a69a6

GolfWRX poker chips, and Scotty Cameron’s legendary Teryllium Tei3 Newport putters, a.k.a. the ones with the dots on them. They can make anyone smile.

See what GolfWRX members are saying about the Kentucky high school photos in the forums.

Looks like my bag would be perfect for high school golf (I even have the sky marks and the push cart!)

some of these posts are so stupid. re-read the article, he isnt making fun of anyone…. its just outlining some differences…. so many complainers on this site… thats what is truly wrong with this game

Ky – JB Holmes did not have the latest / greatest when he played high school golf on a 9 hole course in Campbellsville KY. He has done very well and along with Boo, Bubba, and others that are an example of living the dream from a small town.

The club does not know who is on the other end. The kid from the ” wrong side of the tracks” can smoke the priveledged kid and vice versa. What a great game!

I don’t know which is more disgusting, making fun of kids or those less fortunate not to be able to afford today’s modern clubs. Either way, if this is the level of articles we can expect from golfwrx, this will be my last visit.

The author should issue an immediate apology to these kids he has chosen to belittle.

Notice the writer has not commented of the remarks made on his article?

I’m sure this is just showing at the lower end of the spectrum of what kids are “making it happen” with in their bag, as I’ve seen high school kids at my course with bags that look like they are straight off the tour because they are fortunate enough to have parents who can pay for stuff for them. I don’t believe this article for one bit is trying to bash anyone but show what kids can make happen with little to nothing.

From the looks of the comments, most of the posters have comprehension issues that wouldn’t even let them play HS golf.

I’m happy to get in line and whine when golfwrx sells out or does some inane dork-icle, but this isn’t it.

The author is CLEARLY showing what the kids are doing without all the benefits the pros have. I didn’t read a single word that’s making fun of the kids. It’s a light hearted article with a bit of pro focused fun sarcasm. That so many read it as the opposite should scare you.

This isn’t teasing–it’s classic bullying. Pick on those who are younger, come from less advantaged families, and are new to something you’ve done for longer. Make them feel like they don’t belong to your “exclusive club.” Oh, and then laugh about it with your cronies and give the kids almost no chance for rebuttal. I hope your ego is swelling from making fun of 16-year-olds who are probably playing hand-me-downs because their parents can’t afford anything better. Will the follow-up article expose the differences between their homes and tour pro mansions? Coming from anyone, this is inappropriate. From an adult, it’s pathetic.

  10. MTB

    Oct 12, 2015 at 8:35 am

People are being too sensitive. I see this more as an observation of the differences – I don’t think the author is hoping they’ll have fully matching sets of the latest and greatest.

The only thing I see as a rip (and justified, in my mind) are the iron head covers. That’s just helping the kid out.

    • Scott

      Oct 20, 2015 at 9:33 am

If you are trying to keep the irons for a longer period than a tour player getting a new set with a phone call, covers are the way to go. Especially while traveling. Keep the covers!

And. . . . Remember it all looks the same on the score card. I’m willing to bet most if not all of these kids would mop the floor with most guys at the country club.

    Andrew,
I am in this article and played in the state tournament. I am actually pictured quite a few times in this article. I just want to say, this is what is wrong with golf in today’s time. You know why you would never see these clubs on the PGA tour? Because it isn’t the PGA tour. Many, if not about 99.9% of these kids will never play pro golf and this past week meant a lot to them because it was their masters or their is open. This game is about being a better person and gentleman than it is being a good golfer. Cut us some slack. Last time I checked, it’s the score that matters. Hope kids who read this will realize that it doesn’t matter what you hit. I don’t have a single club in my bag from 2015. And yet I’d be down to play mr. Andrew any day, any time. Let’s grow the game, not mock it.

  13. Tim

    Oct 11, 2015 at 4:13 pm

Am I the only one that sees the tone of the article being that of praise to the high school kids for ‘playing what works’? I see no mocking.

no you are not. I see the same as you did. Everyone is so sensitive here.

When I started reading this I could not help but think how these kids felt-being made fun of on a site this popular. I was shocked as I continued to read that someone would write this and that someone allowed it to be shown.

Easy to criticize journalists etc but this is truly a pathetic article. You should be ashamed of yourself and I don’t say that lightly.

What a ridiculous piece. Those who love the game want it to grow. You don’t do that by implying that the best, most expensive equipment is required. It’s not. Shame on Golfwerx for publishing something so mean-spirited.

I enjoyed reading the many thoughtful comments. Some are uninformed however, because some of the top collegiate and amateur golfers in the world use push/pull carts.

    Dear Andrew,
This is a really sad article to shame these kids on their clubs. They are playing a great game that will teach them a lot about life. By you focusing on the material items that they carry in their bag only shows your own sad state of materialistic happiness.

This article should be removed and a formal apology should be written to these kids, well at least that is what a real man would do.

Hoping you grow up and this site can host more positive topics about growing a great game!

    Regards,
    Keith

Since when was an excuse needed for having grass or dirt on your clubs? It’s not even as if the pictures show, perish the thought, dirt-clogged faces or grooves.

Wow. I’m sure, or rather I hope, that this was intended to be tongue in cheek but it comes across to me as sneering at high school kids who haven’t lavished a fortune on their bags. Not good. in fact, shank.

When your young you make do with what you have and can afford. I donated 3 complete mens set and one women set, plus shoes, bags, and balls to the local HS last year. Please, for those that can afford it, try and support your local HS golf team. They may be the people who help you across the street in the not to distant future.

    Oct 8, 2015 at 6:54 pm

Here’s a thought, rather than ridicule, why not donate some of your old unwanted clubs to your local high school teams. We are all on this sight because we are club nerds or club snobs or both. I for one have been giving my old gear to my local public courses junior team. Totally agree with the comments about growing the game. Be part of the solution and don’t take the piss out of some young players kit.

With the cost of golf constantly rising, I’m glad to see these kids playing at all. They are the future of the game. Who cares what’s in their bags. I would have loved to have any of these when I was a teenager.

  25. Bobtrumpet

    Oct 8, 2015 at 3:37 pm

I guarantee that they never saw a bag of Jack Nicklaus Triple Crown woods (laminated) and irons (blades, baby!) in any tour bag when I was on my HS team in 1973-1975.

  26. golfraven

    Oct 8, 2015 at 2:56 pm

Actually those pics are just half of the story. Have a look at the galleries and you will see some serious bags – tour like. Some boys are serious about this business.

  27. LD

    Oct 8, 2015 at 1:22 pm

Yeah, those dumb teenagers, they will never fit in around here unless they get the cool clubs. Quit studying and chasing girls so you can get 2 jobs to afford $1000 worth of gear every season. I guarantee, that will lower your overall “scores.” What’s that, you want to go hang out with your friends? Not until you finish that paint-fill on your putter and wedges mister…

  28. Bill

    Oct 8, 2015 at 12:49 pm

You don’t have to scrutinize what teenagers hit. It’s the scores that matter last time I checked.

  29. Bill

Here’s an idea, let’s quit scrutinizing TEENAGERS on what they hit, and focus on the scores.

Remarkably the team that won, St. Xavier High School shot a tournament record -19 under 557 as a team and won by 37 shots. They are arguably the best Kentucky high school team ever. I guess whatever equipment they were using worked just fine.

  31. Mike

    Oct 8, 2015 at 11:52 am

Awesome, takes me back to my high school golf team days in the late 90’s early 2000s. The only thing I don’t understand are the pull carts. I’m 30 and still carry my bag all 18. How are these kids not laughed off the course for loading up their clubs on a pull cart!? Do the rich kids have the motorized ones? Is that even fair that some kids carry their club and others pull them? It seems like most athletes coming out of high school these days are bigger and stronger. I guess golfers are trending in the other direction.

    • Sappy

      Oct 8, 2015 at 12:28 pm

Why would anyone waste energy in a tournament, if you are allowed to pull? Why should anyone laugh at them for pulling? And since everyone can decide, wether to pull or to carry, it is fair. I bet, noone laughes at you for not pulling, althougha carry-bag puts more strain on your spine and shoulders.

      • Brian

        Oct 8, 2015 at 12:47 pm

Yeah that guy… Probably drives it 225 with the wind. Stud alert.

      • Mike

        Oct 8, 2015 at 4:09 pm

You’re right Sappy, if you are allowed to choose whether to pull of carry it is fair. As far as wasting energy maybe. Would be interesting to see what burns more calories carrying a bag or pushing a cart, but you have to agree that golf is not a very physically demanding sport and these are high school kids. I remember going out and playing 27 or 36 holes a day during the summer when I was in high school. Yeah, carrying a bag does put more strain on my back and shoulders but as long as I’m healthy I have no problem carrying my bag. From a physiology stand point I know that our bodies adapt to the demands and stresses placed upon them. That’s why people who workout get stronger. Maybe it’s just a generational thing and I’m a little old fashioned, but unless you have arthritic knees or a bad back or any other physical ailment you need to buck up and carry your bag.

    • golfraven

      Oct 8, 2015 at 2:50 pm

The kids around my area have cards worth around 2000$ and matching Titleist bags and clubs with those. It is refreshing to see folks using whatever goes, not what is the newest gear on the market. Although clubs with so much gras on them are just gross.

  32. shimmy

    Oct 8, 2015 at 11:48 am

Why is this the lead story on the front page?

  33. Double Mocha Man

    Oct 8, 2015 at 11:46 am

When I was in high school I played 1st man using catalogue-ordered Lou Hammel clubs or something like that. My teen son, on the golf team, uses an assortment of my old Titleists, Callaways, Pings and Srixons. There’s one kid on the team who uses his Grandfather’s hand-me-down clubs. I didn’t get real clubs until I played college golf… which I bought on the lay-away plan from the pro shop. They let me use them while I was at the course, but I had to turn them back in at the end of the day before the shop closed.

Agree with Mike D. This article could have been done by snapping pics at any muni on a saturday afternoon, pretty sure you didn’t need to raz some teenagers.

  36. BoutThatGolfLife

    Oct 8, 2015 at 11:04 am

I’m old… Graduated from high school in 2000. The “players” bags were made up of titleist 962, 962B, 990, or Mizzy MP-14s with a titleist 975D or 976R driver, an old S2H2 or Warbird or titleist PT fairway, some Cleveland wedges, and a choice Ping Anser or Scotty putter. I myself, was not a player so I aside from the wedges, the rest of the listed clubs were mere aspirational points.

    • blakehall

      Oct 8, 2015 at 11:32 am

As a ’99 grad, I have (almost) that exact set sitting in my garage.

      Titleist 962 3-PW w/S300s
56* 60* Cleveland wedges (so worn out they’ve been given away or sold)
      Titleist 975D 8.5* Driver
      Big Bertha 3W (steel shaft)
      Titleist PT 5 wood
Ping Zing 2 & Scotty Newport Oil Can finish

  37. Mike D.

    Oct 8, 2015 at 10:31 am

    The irony of this article…

SGI irons that were heavily promoted by all the major mags and even this site. Now trashed by the author.

Whining all over the golf world about how we can’t grow the game. So to help Andrew thought he’d mock some high school kids. Because, you know, nothing inspires a teenager like some good natured ribbing.

That Titleist fairway is a 904 or a 906. So if you’re gonna rip the club do your homework. Especially if it performs just as well as t he hyped up clubs of today.

I’d give the author the benefit of the doubt that this just comedic humor. However the intro and closing reek of something entirely different.

      Oct 8, 2015 at 12:08 pm

I can see the purist and “old school” thought but I hope no teen or anyone reads into this and thinks poorly of their game. I do appreciate the good nature teasing and I hope readers take it as that.
