A Coat of a Different Color – Furyk Wins Verizon Heritage Classic
It may have come a week later than he hoped but Jim Furyk has secured his 15th win on the PGA Tour. He did so in a strange setting today that saw his fellow competitor, Brian Davis, call a penalty on himself on the first hole of a playoff to virtually hand the victory to the man he battled all day long.
Davis may have a few things in common with Furyk – adidas golf shoes, a Scotty Cameron crafted putter, and both are a part of the Srixon Golf staff, but Davis differs in one big way – wins on the PGA Tour. Currently his tally stands at zero but you can expect that might change in the near future. His birdie on the final hole of regulation today was very impressive. Unfortunately he will still have to learn to overcome the nerves that plagued his short putts on holes 15 and 16, which led to bogeys. If not for them a playoff would not be necessary and he would have earned a Tartan jacket.
Even so Davis was proud of his play this week and did not look for any sympathy for the situation on hole #18 at Harbour Town. As he said, starting with the 7 iron he pulled into the dry bottom of Calabogie Sound, everything that followed was his responsibility. “I just shouldn’t have it in the hazard.” Plain as that, no “woe is me”, no “what could have been.” It’s admirable but it likely won’t make the finish any more palatable when he looks back on it tonight. No first win. No new threads.
Instead it was Furyk who slipped on the plaid. It was far from the Green Jacket he yearned for last week but then again, his play at Harbour Town was dramatically better than what he displayed at Augusta National where he bowed out after two rounds.
The Pennsylvania native now joins Ernie Els as the only two-time winners on the PGA Tour in 2010. Just about a month ago he won the Transitions Championship at Innisbrook. Despite his disappointment last week he still feels he is on top of his game.
“Right now I am playing as well as I have in my career,” Furyk stated after donning the jacket earned by the Verizon Heritage Classic winners. “Right now I am playing as well as I have in my career. I feel good about the way I’ve played this last month. It is not a matter of continuing to play at this level but to keep working on improving. I still have a few things I am working on.”
Unlike in round three, when ten players either led or had a share of the lead, Sunday was a two man race most of the day. Rickie Fowler made an early charge before dropping back to get a piece of eighth place. And, as is tradition at Harbour Town, the back nine eroded the scores and dreams of many a player.
Bo Van Pelt and Luke Donald each posted three bogeys on the back nine today. The pair ended the day tied for third behind Furyk and Davis.
With the win Furyk gets his first multiple-win season since 2006 when he won the Wachovia Championship and RBC Canadian Open. He also now rises to 2nd place in the FedEx Cup standings and has earned just under $2.4 Million in eight starts this year.
Standing in his new wardrobe addition in the media room after his post-win presser a relaxed Furyk quipped, “I’d say I make this jacket look good but I don’t.”
No matter Jim, wins always look good on the PGA Tour, no matter what pattern of fabric they come wrapped in.
Notes:
– This makes six straight weeks that the winner of a PGA Tour event has been playing a Callaway driver. Furyk plays the FT Tour driver and uses an Oban shaft.
-The PGA Tour now heads to New Orleans for the Zurich Classic. Watch for our preview story posted here and at www.flagstick.com in the next few days.
