Greenbrier Classic preview

The PGA Tour heads to White Sulpher Springs, W.V., for the Greenbrier Classic on the par-70, 7,241 yard Old White TPC course. After the sweltering heat and storms at Congressional last week, the heat figures to be a factor again. The Old White course did not escape the storms, having lost 60 trees to the same storms that plagued Congressional.

However, the Greenbrier is quickly becoming one of the must see tournaments of the year on Tour. This year they boast one of their strongest fields to date, riding the momentum of having their contract extended with the PGA until 2021.

Tiger Woods is making his first appearance at the tournament having outlasted Bo Van Pelt at the Congressional last week. While Tiger has three wins on the year and is first in FedExCup points, his three wins have all come on courses he is familiar with and has confidence playing. Also, there are questions whether Tiger can put together back-to-back weeks to contend for victory.

For Phil Mickelson the questions are when can he regain the form he had at Pebble Beach early in the year. Phil looked to be off to a strong start after lapping the field at Pebble Beach, but since then has struggled to play four consistent rounds.

Defending champion, Scott Stallings, returns looking to defend his first victory. Stallings has struggled all year with rib and back injuries causing him to miss seven of the last eight cuts.

The tournament will air on the Golf Channel on Thursday thru Friday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. EST and on CBS Saturday through Sunday from 3 p.m. 6 p.m. EST.

Fun facts: Charles Blair Macdonald built the Old White TPC course in 1914 after some of the more famous European courses. Stuart Appleby holds the course record shooting 59 in the fourth round in 2010 to win the tournament.

GolfWRX is on site this week at the Valero Texas Open.

The event has been around since 1922, making it one of the oldest on the PGA Tour calendar. Over the years, it’s been held at a variety of courses across the Lone Star State, but it’s found its home at TPC San Antonio in recent years. Some of the biggest names in golf have taken home the title here, including Arnold Palmer, Ben Hogan, Lee Trevino, and Ben Crenshaw.

GolfWRX has its usual assortment of general galleries, WITBs and special pull-out albums. As always, we’ll continue to update the links below as more photos come in from TPC San Antonio.
