Fred Couples too laid back for Ryder Cup captaincy?

Published

on

Can someone be too laid back to be a leader? Too cool to be a captain?

According to Golf World’s Jaime Diaz, Couples’ care-free demeanor was one of the reasons why Fred Couples was passed over as captain the 2016 U.S. Ryder Cup team.

Couples is well-known for his calming effect, and is undefeated as U.S. Captain at the Presidents Cup (’09, ’11 and ’13). According to Diaz, however, there was a feeling that Couples let down the losing 2012 U.S. Ryder Cup team as assistant captain when he wasn’t reachable on his cell phone or walkie-talkie on the course.

Couples was also said to take the easy way out by texting Jim Furyk, instead of calling him, to inform Furyk that he wouldn’t be a captain’s pick for the 2013 Presidents’ Cup team. Furyk is on the infamous U.S. Task Force, so maybe he was the wrong guy to snub.

If “laid back” means “irresponsible,” then the U.S. made the right decision. But based on his leadership in past Presidents Cups, Couples’ nerve-calming persona seems to produce winning results.

You know what would be “too cool?” Winning a Ryder Cup this decade. That’s a lot of European flags in the win column.

Not being a PGA kind of guy is the reason I love Freddy but get more and more disillusioned with the PGA. I’m so tired of watching or reading about how great Ted Bishop was, minus the arrogance. I’m so tired of watching that Sprague guy pat himself on the back about the state of golf. Whaley was a feel good story for about the week she was out in public. Where’s she at now, all I hear anymore is Derek Sprague talking about how great it is he helped elect a woman as a Secretary. As if making a woman a secretary is some kind of leap forward.

They could give Freddy the Captaincy now. But then what will they have left for excuses after we lose the cup? Couples in 2018. By then They’ll probably have Ted Bishop back. Paul Azinger will sell more books, and Fred Couples will be just fine.

Didn’t even have to read the article, from the headline I knew this was stupid. Couples captained 3 winning President’s Cup teams in a row. He’s an amazing captain for these sorts of events. Do I think Love will do a great job? Yes. I would love to see him get a redemption win, whether he deserves another try is another question. However, I think Couples needs to be a Vice Captain and then be main Captain next go-around because he is an amazing leader and it’ll be long overdue at that point.

I hate to be a grumpy old man, but here goes: The Americans are all basically (Talented), Selfish, Spoiled, Millionaires that don’t really burn to beat the Euros. The Euros share the same attributes but they really dig deep to show up the big,bad Americans.. Winning means lot more to them and although it isn’t reality at this point they thrive on the ‘underdog’ mentality. Lastly, The U.S. sucks at Alternate-shot and seems to have some choke in them when in comes to singles. I’m really not convinced the Captain makes a big difference unless the players just flat don’t like him or revolt against his decisions.

I don’t think it even matters who the captain is, the bottom line is the Americans need to perform what happened after last years cup was a joke. Phil and the other guys talking about a winning formula when their play is what cost the US the cup in the end. Watson did exactly what the PGA wanted him to do, but you can’t play old school with all these rich young guys these days. The captain really does nothing to affect their play or decide the outcome with the exception of deciding who sits, which in my opinion needs to be changed anyway. Let all 12 play every day like the Presidents cup. These guys play for themselves, they understand what it takes to win and they shouldn’t need a Captain to support them or build them up for them to play well bottom line.

Couples is a proven winner in these kinds of events; Davis Love isn’t – yet. Again, politics, instead of common sense, rules the PGA’s decision-making process. The PGA has never liked Couples because, as they put it, “he’s not a PGA kind of guy.” Despite Lee Trevino’s recent comments that Phil Mickelson should have kept his mouth shut, I think Phil’s comments are making more sense as each day passes. The PGA seems to think that the revenge factor will come into play, and that the players will try harder to get Love a win this time around. Really? Representing they’re country should be all the motivation they need to play well and win. Face it – if the U.S. doesn’t win the 2016 Ryder Cup, then they need to clean house at the PGA HQs. As for Couples, he always seems to have the last laugh.

For lots more photos, check out the full thread here.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • btyh: “Holy offset.”
  • Glf_LU: “These are interesting. Not going to make a rush to judgement until I see them in person. It does look like a little more offset than I would expect to see in this model.”
  • bcflyguy1: “Kisner is not one to make a lot of equipment changes (see the GBB driver he’s still using), so if these do have staying power in his bag that will be interesting to see. I have to wonder if there’s something different about his set, because like others have mentioned there appears to be more offset on his than I recall seeing in the samples I’ve had in hand.”

WATCH: PGA Tour players play hole blindfolded and it’s hilarious/amazing

Published

on

As part of a Srixon campaign, four PGA Tour players recently participated in a three-hole challenge, with each hole being a different game; hole No. 1 was blindfolded, hole No. 2 was costumes and distractions, and hole No. 3 was alternate shot with a baseball bat. The teams were Smylie Kaufman and Sam Ryder against Shane Lowry and Grayson Murray.

Watch the full video below, since it is quite entertaining (albeit not the type of golf that Old Tom Morris surely had in mind), but in particular, make sure to check out the first hole where Lowry and Ryder play a full hole completely blind folded. It’s amazing to watch how badly Ryder struggles, and how Lowry nearly makes par.

Cleveland-Srixon’s marketing department has been hard at work crafting these viral-esque ad campaigns; if you remember, former long-drive champion Jamie Sadlowski recently dressed as 80-year-old Grandpa Jamie to fool range-goers. That video has since gathered over 1.2 million views on YouTube.
