Tiger to take time away from the PGA Tour

Published

on

On Wednesday, Tiger Woods announced that he’ll be taking a break for an unspecified amount of time from the PGA Tour.

[quote_center]”The last two weeks have been very disappointing to me, especially Torrey, because I never want to withdraw,” Tiger said on his website. “Unfortunately, lately injuries have made that happen too often.”[/quote_center]

Woods, who recently withdrew from the Farmers Insurance Open citing a back injury, says that injury is not sole the reason he’s taking a break from professional golf — it’s his game, among other things.

[quote_box_center]”Right now, I need a lot of work on my game, and to still spend time with the people that are important to me. My play, and scores, are not acceptable for tournament golf. Like I’ve said, I enter a tournament to compete at the highest level, and when I think I’m ready, I’ll be back.”[/quote_box_center]

“This latest injury is not related to my previous surgery,” he added. “I am having daily physical therapy and I am feeling better every day.

Mark Steinberg, Woods’ manager with Excel Sports, told the Golf Channel that between his therapist and trainer, there were no concerns for the health of Woods’ back after leaving Torrey Pines on Friday. Woods started “getting worked on immediately” and was “resting pretty comfortably.”

Steinberg also corroborated Woods’ sentiments that the break from professional golf is not injury-related.

[quote_box_center]“It’s not dependent on health right now,” Steinberg said. “It’s having the time to focus on the game in an uninterrupted way. Doing it in the public spotlight, understandably so, it’s not the most conducive.”[/quote_box_center]

Woods was scheduled to play at the Honda Classic on Feb. 26, but his participation in the event is uncertain.

[quote_box_center]”Next week I will practice at Medalist and at home getting ready for the rest of the year. I am committed to getting back to the pinnacle of my game. I’d like to play The Honda Classic — it’s a tournament in my hometown and it’s important to me — but I won’t be there unless my game is tournament-ready. That’s not fair to anyone. I do, however, expect to be playing again very soon.”[/quote_box_center]

Please guys a little bid respect for one off the greatest players in the game ever.

Never ceases to amaze me how many people dislike post scandal Tiger. What is it that you feel Tiger Woods has done to you, personally? Are you sticking up for Elin? Is she your girl? He lies, to the media, concerning injuries, are you really that impeccably honest? Does Bill Bellichek draw the same disapproval when he B.S.’s his way through a press conference, or is that still ok because he’s still winning? Support Tiger Woods, you’re a slurper, not a sports fan. I’ve got nothing against Tiger Woods. Looking forward to the next time I get to watch him play, period.

The cookie cutters are ruining golf and bringing nothing exciting to the game. Really, jimmy walker? about as entertaining as cooking marshmallows on a stick….. maybe less! I will wait a few more years and watch the senior tour because its more like golf. Don’t even get me started on how horribly dull and uninteresting the lpga is!!!!

It is sad Tiger is playing poorly, but take a good look each week at some of the guys missing cuts, the level of play on PGA tour is back to where maybe, MAYBE, there are 60 guys that can actual play well week in and week out…..what we are seeing more of “Lottery Golf” you are getting to many one week wonders out there now. I wonder what the level of play would be like if the payouts dropped in half? There is two many take your million and run players out there basicly getting in the way of the real players…..

So glad to see that Tiger is trying to get his priorities straightened out in his personal life as well as being honest to himself and us viewers about the state of his game. I am anxious to see if he follows through with the commitment he seems to be making to getting his game back together and not continuing with the body excuses. Maybe there is some humility there after all?!

I hope his significant others will be able to understand that he really needs to spend LOTS of time and energy on his game in order to have any hope of resurrecting his game of old. They will need to be supportive of that and give him the space to do so.

I also hope that he will be able to humble himself and re-connect with Butch Harmon and/or Hank Haney who could help him get back to what worked so well before.

AND PLEASE, TIGER… IF YOU ARE READING THIS, PLEASE DUST OFF THE CAMERON NEWPORT 2 PUTTER AND DUMP THAT NIKE HUNK OF JUNK!!! 😉 I think you lost confidence in your putting when you made the change and it wasn’t working for you. Do what you have to do to get that Cameron putter back in the bag!

alright. i’m going to tell you the deal with tiger. no one that i’ve listened to has talked about it, and i know because it happened to me. i was a budding player who regularly shot in mid/low 60s and turned pro. after turning pro i listened to anyone i thought could help me and sought perfection. all the little changes i made i felt i could handle because i thought i was in control. i wrecked my game in about a year and a half. on top of that, because of the subtle changes i made i developed shoulder trouble which led to a tear in my rotator cuff. i could no longer hit fairways or even have good misses and this affected my confidence big time. then i couldn’t get near pins and it was over. if you’ve not under par in a professional tournament you’re toast. that’s tiger…

Tom is right on here, I have been writing about this for years now. His problem is listening to horrid information for 15 years now and he has gotten in his swing. Tom I bet you had a darn good swing when you first came out and just got bad information from people you thought knew better. Happens all the time, and has taken many players down, now it just happens to be one of the best ever. The good news is he can be fixed in a week with the right coach……..

        Feb 14, 2015 at 12:07 pm

I agree, but not really. if tiger continues with the coaching route, what he needs is a coach who played at the top of the game. butch was good for tiger because butch played on the pga tour, albeit a short time, and butch’s dad won the masters. so butch was good for him – he helped turn a wild swing (good enough to win like crazy) into a repeatable swing. we all know the tiger/butch story. hank? where did he play and what did he win? foley? eh hem… chris como? i’m sure he’s a nice guy and has great ethics and morals, etc., but he can’t help tiger anymore than i could. if i were tiger i’d go knock on lee trevino’s door and say “what’s up pal? wanna hang out for a couple of days?” trevino would love to help tiger. that’s my story and i’m sticking with it

Tigers issue IMHO is much more than his backside and back. The guy needs to get out there and work his way through this. His schedule is terrible. No longer can he rock up at the majors and have 95% of the field beaten before he tees it up.

Playing and eating a bit of humble pie thrown from Harmon or Haney would also help.

At least he is honest with himself and lets say it he has the $$$ in his bank. Wish life was that easy for us office monkeys just to drop the mouse&phone and take as much time off we wanted. Job would be sweet if I didn’t have to deal with my customers – at the end this is what Tiger does with his job being on the tour.

    Feb 12, 2015 at 9:33 am

He needs to chip and pitch till his hands bleed…forget the driver and irons.

As Nicklaus said it’s far easier to swing harder than it is to learn to swing slower. Tiger doesn’t need to throttle down, I think that would be catastrophic.

  13. Chris

    Feb 12, 2015 at 8:53 am

Listen, I am by no means a Tiger lover. I think the guy is arrogant and has an ego to be reckoned with. That being said, I like this move. What this shows is that he is coming to grips with the fact that his game just isn’t good right now. This is Tiger’s way of showing humility and not blaming his S**t game on a back injury or “deactivated glutes”. Will he be back? Sure. But it definitely won’t be at the dominant level it once was and at least for forseeable future, Jack’s record is safe.

    Feb 12, 2015 at 8:07 am

What is the difference, he doesn’t play the weekends anyway. To much swing thoughts, to much juice, to much body building, to much Sean Foley. Drop his girlfriend go back banging rags at Denny’s. Rory dropped his girlfriend and his game instantly improved. Just go back to being a range rat and hitting your 9 shots of golf. All these thoughts ruined him. It is like the Beatles hiring a music teacher to teach them to write songs and they use the advice and die a slow death.

I see he’s taking my Twitter advice to heart. I told him to grow a moustache and go play a season on the Web tour as Tiger Jones so no one will recognize him.

Tiger just needs to figure out what he wants to do at this point in his life. He has more money than God and obviously doesn’t need to play. As an athlete, he wants to compete at the same level he was before. Problem is, he may never get there again. He also seems to want to spend more time with his personal life. That’s great, but it’s taking away from practice/playing time.
If people want to watch someone shoot 82 they are more than welcome to come watch me play.;)

Good for him. As as a living legend, playing tournaments or not he still has a lot to offer the game, perhaps for decades to come (incredible what he’s achieved southside of 40.)

UM that a 82 at Torrey Pines not some community course, just saying. Also where they held the 2008 US open.

        • bwoody01

          Feb 12, 2015 at 4:07 pm

Dapadre – Torrey is a municipal (“community”) course… just thought we would clear that up…

            Feb 12, 2015 at 6:06 pm

I have played Torrey. I shot 79 from the tips. I understand the the tourney tees may or may not be different, and the course was not set up for an event but. just saying. But I Think Tiger could beat me given almost ten strokes. Maybe not though. You never know.

Um, 82 wasn’t at Torrey Pines. He didn’t even complete the first round. The 82 was in Phoenix.

I wish Tiger nothing but the best for a recovery, return to golf and peace in his personal life. Is he perfect? No. But then again, who among us is? He deserves better than the butt end of jokes and jabs he has received since his return this year.

Did you read the same web page as the rest of us? It mentions nothing that can be construed as leave of absence. He’ll just continue to work on his game until he can play at a professional level. Your title is a bit of a stretch, don’t you think?

    • COGolger

      Feb 11, 2015 at 10:20 pm

Misleading to say the least; I was expecting a very different message. I guess in Tiger’s case, if he leaves, it reads…

    • Brian

      Feb 12, 2015 at 7:56 am

He said “won’t play until I’m ready” which is the textbook definition of indefinite. So the article is not misleading in the slightest.

Well Tiger… Stay off the internet and don’t listen to the media. You know your game, swing and what it will take to get back. You inspired me and many others to grind it out. To find the anser in the dirt. To fight through adversity to come through on the other side a fighter.

Good luck Tiger and we hope you get back sooner than ever.

fair enough, nice to see him own it.
tiger at his best was one of the rare times i’ll sit down and watch an entire round of non-major golf, the things he was able to do with the golf ball were incredible
tiger right now i can see every weekend down my local golf club

I’d take your “club’s” (aka public course) club champion @ Torrey this past weekend and would say he’d shoot 95 or higher!! Your “Club” at 6200 yards doesn’t really scare tour guys that would go 5-iron wedge to your par 4’s! But yeah…be powerful behind that keyboard!

          • jonno

            Feb 12, 2015 at 5:35 pm

            cool story

i dont actually live in the US, we have a proper amateur golfing system where we can join golf clubs without having to spend x million a year joining a “country club”, and for the record my club’s course is 7.1kms long (i’ll let you do the translation into american yourself).
Fact is this, if our current club champion (a +4 marker fyi) were hitting chips like that, he’d no longer be the club champion – a 10 marker would be embarrassed.
Good luck mr woods, hope you can get your game back in shape for the Masters, i’ll put $10 on you for the win – best odds we’ll ever see for Tiger at the masters this year i suspect!

GolfWRX is on site this week at the Cognizant Classic —FKA the Honda Classic.

The first leg of the PGA Tour’s traditional “Florida swing,” the Cognizant Classic continues to be contested at PGA National’s Champion Course in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, host course of the 1983 Ryder Cup and 1987 PGA Championship. The course is known for its famed “Bear Trap,” a three-hole stretch of holes that take their name from Jack “The Golden Bear” Nicklaus, who redesigned the course in 2002.

The Bear Trap includes No. 15 (a par 3), No. 16 (a par 4), and No. 17 (a par 4). All three holes involve water and have led to several big numbers from Tour players over the years.

Check out an assortment of general galleries, WITBs, and pullout albums below.
