Tiger says Jenkins went too far

Published

on

Satire has its place, but being mean without provocation is just pointless. Dan Jenkins, veteran journalist for Golf Digest toed the line, then took another step into the realm of mean-spiritedness — or so Tiger Woods says.

Dan Jenkins and the Golf Digest team concocted a satirical interview between Jenkins and Tiger, covering topics like his notoriously bad tipping of waiters and waitresses, treating his friends poorly and using nicknames for everyone. It also attacked the perceived weak competition he played against during his prime, suggesting he had no competition. Digest even hired a Tiger Woods look-a-like to stage photos, such as Tiger taking a selfie at Perkins Restaurant & Bakery.

You can read the fake interview, which was published in Golf Digest magazine, at the bottom of this link. You can read Tiger’s response here on Derek Jeter’s new website.

Tiger and his team went on the offensive with their defense, writing a letter to Golf Digest, and Woods’ self-written (well, maybe) blog post on Jeter’s site, before the original piece even ran publicly on media outlets.

What this really means is that Twitter will explode with talk about Tiger’s response, salivating at the chance to read the original piece, then call Tiger a bunch of names and suggest he be more thick-skinned.

But, really, Tiger hasn’t done anything recently to deserve the satirical display. Isn’t bashing him so 2009? He hasn’t won a major since 2008 and had one of the messiest divorces in recent memory. In April, he had back surgery and has played terrible since he returned. He missed this year’s Ryder Cup with another back injury and has been watching his buddy Rory McIlroy win majors like Tiger did in his prime — while listening to the media tell Rory that he’s better than Tiger ever was.

Geez, Jenkins, cut the guy some slack for now, eh? Let him win again before you bring up the tipping at restaurants thing, no? It makes Jenkins just look upset that Tiger denied him the interviews he really wanted, so he bashed him in a fake one.

I do believe satire and media outlets like The Onion can be funny at times — and those outlets are well within their right to publish such content — but seriously, there’s really no point in going below the belt and rehashing unoriginal old jokes.

It may be a simple case of Tiger’s dislike of the media and the media’s belief that it’s well within its right to embarrass public figures, but I think it’s even simpler than that. If Jenkins didn’t use the played out “Marko, Butchie, Steiny” joke and came up with something more original, I don’t think Tiger would have cared.

If you decide to throw unsolicited shots at Tiger, you better come correct!

Go get em Dan. In the tradition of Bob Drum and the great writers of the past. Tiger should have talked to Dan Jenkins years ago. He thinks he can ignore the press and pick and choose his cupcake interviews. Try getting a autograph from Eldrick , good luck. He will go down as one the greatest golfers ever and one of the rudest.

It’s all about money. The media is very mean and very unforgiving. No one is perfect, not Tiger woods and not Jenkins. If Tiger was still No:1 jenkins would not dare venture into this territory. He seems desperate to create news about Tiger as Tiger still sells and he needs sales. Tiger claims to be a golfer, not a saint, not a politician. If he is a cheapo so what, so are plenty of other billionaires. If he is a womanizer, so what, many men are. Be professional mr. Jenkins, don’t be a vulture, be an eagle. Write about golf, not what is tiger like with his friends. I don’t GAF what tiger does away from a golf course.

I’m not a fan of Tiger anymore or less than I’m a fan of Jack or Phil or Rory or any other pro. I’m simply a fan of the game of golf, you know, that once classy sport. Jenkins and Golf Digest have substantially lowered the bar by engaging in vengeful and hateful public behaviors behind a thinly veiled guise of supposed satirical humorous writing. This behavior requires an apology. An apology to the game of golf. We used to be better than this.

This wasn’t Onion-style satire, but childish, name-calling crap. It’s not that Tiger doesn’t have flaws, but this piece left me with a feeling that the author was just blatantly mean-spirited. If I were his boss, I’d give serious thought to simply canning him.

This is a man who publicly courted publicity and fabricated a wholesome image, has become very wealthy off the back of it, and even if it is a somewhat cheap shot in terms of timing (apropos of what? Why now?) has thrown his toys out of the pram because he is unable to confront how it has all gone so equally, publicly sour. Throw in your partner making a comment that suggests she’s not very bright and the response looks WAY to heavy handed. Whatever the timing or motive, if it isn’t quite l ‘the truth hurts’ the article does ‘hit close to home’. It must be galling for Woods because the machine he relies upon to protect his financial interests seems to have one default setting of ‘outrage’. He’d have been better off not giving a bogus, superficial ‘public apology’ back when it all unravelled, that he felt obliged to give, or was advised to give. If he’d been honest about who he is as a person and not what he thought or took advice on what his management team thought was needed to limit the fall-out, perhaps he would be in less turmoil mentally on the golf course. He had a very good 2013, and then the back injury, so has it in him. But there are people that, mistakenly, believe at any sign of a Woods injury story that it is a fake. My point is, deluded as they might be, it is indicative of the problem at the core of this when people’s first reaction is one of disbelief. Mr Woods might consider that his public image is broken, and relying on the same PR methods that create his fortune won’t work so well; his behaviour has shifted a sizeable number of people’s opinion about him irrevocably. He just looks, and by virtue of his PR releases, comes across as someone that is genuinely baffled as to why the tried and trusted techniques no longer work (on as well as off the course). He cuts a petulant, disconsolate figure.

Jenkins has wanted a real interview for years with tiger. Never could get one. Is it just me? tiger is just plain rude. Have you ever seen him signs autographs? I never liked the idea of one guy who was bigger than the game. It is going to take time but the tiger statue has to come down. Lets get back to the clubs doing the talking. Team tiger cannot censure that.

Dear Mr. Eldrick Tont “Tiger” Woods and all those who are “outraged” by this article.

Remember when golf was a game? remember when golf was something you did for FUN? If not, maybe it is time to go back and play a round for FUN! Maybe its time to walk up to a muni golf course, you remember them? Where you can get a cold hot dog, a small bag of chips and a warm beer for $7.00, Where the golf pro is also the starter AND the snack bar attendant, where half the range balls have the dimples worn off and the others are stray balls from the first fairway. Maybe it time to once again try to hit the ball before the sprinkler goes around and soaks you, maybe its time to once again get down on all four and putt using your putter like a cue stick. Remember when golf USED to be FUN?!?!? If not, stop playing golf until you do. Because it is a GOLF GAME.

I am surprised no one has mentioned Tiger released his comments through Derek Jeter’s new website. Tiger, Dan Jenkins and Jeter were all in on this. Write a fake article(Jenkins), Tiger react to the article on Jeter’s website. Then collect the royalties through the page views because the controversy. What a bunch of scammers. #Mousetrapped

I am really disappointed in Golf Digest, I was already contemplating not renewing now I am sure I won’t. They have really taken a bad turn in golf journalism these last couple of years. I am not interested in reading any articles about some beautiful woman who they say is what golf is about. Palmer/Hudson, the Gretzky girl, the closest thing they got to that theme was Holly Sonders whom TGC locked out. When you think they have an article about equipment it isn’t much more than pictures and a paragraph. It isn’t important if Dan Jenkins has the right to write anything but it is just poor judgment. The first time I ever heard that Tiger might not be as generous a tipper as say Phil Mickelson was at this magazine. I mean really??? He was one of the first really big charities for golf long time ago. Now you have these guys coming up with this holier than thou crap. I think Jenkins has lost much of his writing prowess if this is all he can come up with to entertain us. Good bye Golf Digest and The Golf Channel. Start boycotting these guys.

I’d be impressed to just get the website to render correctly on a mobile device. Otherwise, stop inviting people to participate. Bad journalism aside, Tiger is 15 years older than Rory, is a fantastic ambassador to the game, and successfully raising 2 kids as a single parent (on top of the other observations). I’m thinking it sounds like a pretty bad choice for these other folks to be so cruel and insensitive to his situation to produce such a piece. It’s they that should be ashamed, not vice versa. This isn’t the act of a friend playing a good natured joke – or at least that’s not how it is being presented.

Honestly, getting tired of all of the public media drama being crafted. We don’t need that kind of attention.

What is Golf Digest and who is Tiger Woods? Seems like I remember them from long ago. I counted more advertisement pages in Golf Digest than actual published pages one month long ago when I actually read the magazine for the last time and if you don’t want to get satired, don’t do stupid stuff, then there is nothing to satire. Once you are in the public eye you will get criticized and praised. If you can’t take it then don’t read it or don’t get famous. I would think Tiger’s millions would allow him not to worry about that crap. In retrospect I’m surprise Dan Jenkins is still alive. Didn’t he satire Walter Hagen in the November 1927 issue.

I read this article while browsing through the magazine at the newsstand. I didn’t think it was all that funny. The stories about Tiger’s personal failings have been around for a long time so the piece was timely. I think Tiger’s people mishandled the response and have drawn a lot more attention to the piece than it would received otherwise.

The fabricated interview with TW made me sick because I realized I’m wasting my money.
Not because it is about TW, but because I subscribe to the magazine
as a tool to help me get better. I read the magazine cover to cover to ;earn how to get better.

That being said, let me ask you folks two simple questions:
Will reading the fake interview help you shoot lower scores?
Is playing better the reason why you purchased the magazine?
If you answered the same why I did, I can help but second guess my subscription.

In the UK most people think this: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/golf/tigerwoods/11240083/Tiger-Woodss-reaction-to-fake-interview-was-pathetic-and-the-self-pitying-cries-of-an-arrogant-ignorant-billionaire.html

Granted, you would think that with all his experience, Tiger Woods would appreciate this, and if not the 14-time major winner, then perhaps his media team, whose only job we had previously believed was to say “no”. You might also suspect that he and they would recognise the absurdity in claiming that some readers believed an interview marked “fake” on the cover of the magazine and “fake” in the headline was actually genuine.

I have a seven-year-old son who believes his grandfather plays golf with Father Christmas every Tuesday who spotted it as a spoof. Maybe it was the Woods look-a-like, who does not look that much like Woods, who the magazine employed to pose for pictures. Or maybe it was the headline in huge type across the spread which reads “My Interview With Tiger*” with the subheading of “*Or how it plays out in my mind”. Whatever, my clever little boy saw through it.

But Lindsey Vonn is worried. Woods’s girlfriend took time off her World Cup skiing training to tell USA Today why he decided to pen his, by now, already infamous riposte to the Golf Digest article. “It was like a fabricated interview, like what [the writer] thinks Tiger would say,” Vonn said. Yes, thanks for that Lindsey. That is what parodies are. They imitate with the intention to lampoon. The target is not supposed to find them amusing. Other people are.

I didn’t find it particularly funny. But Tiger should have just let it go. His response drew much more interest than the article. Hard to argue with certain facts though. Tiger is a crappy tipper and its been well documented numerous times. When Tiger responds he always blames it on “his people” or demurs by saying he doesn’t carry cash. If it really bothered him its a problem he could have easily remedied. He’s played in enough tournaments and been to enough restaurants. He’s even opening one. Finally its hard to feel sympathy for him when he and his people chose to hold a nationally televised press conference to discuss his sex addiction and his proposed treatment with his mother in the audience. And without getting into a long diatribe on slander or defamation, trust me it is neither, at least as far as an actionable claim.

I read the article by Jenkins and had a good laugh.

At this point, Eldrick’s bank account is about a zillion times larger than Dan’s, so he really doesn’t have much to complain about. If writers and magazines and the media weren’t paying attention, Tiger wouldn’t have Privacy etc.

But Tiger may be so dense that he bends light rays.

    Wait, that was someone else….

I re-upped my subscription. Plus, I like the swing sequence videos on my iPad where I can trace my finger over the line real fast and watch the players swing about 1000 miles per hour.

  28. Carl truitt

    Nov 19, 2014 at 2:44 pm

The piece was pretty stupid in my opinion, and I think it is symbolic of the age in which we all live in whereby credentialed journalists (and publications) become bottom feeders for eyeballs. The truth is that the target audience loves the ludicrous and ridiculous (just like the advertisers want when they claim their new club goes further than their last record breaking long driver

Is that good, or is it bad…guess we will have to wait and see once all the old school types are gone.

I do believe though, if you think about the Jenkins piece, and Tiger’s response…you will see that the tactics used by both sides were not all that different.

In fact, I believe that Tiger and his management team are much smarter than anyone thinks. This story gave Tiger the opportunity to do a couple key things: 1) push traffic to Jeter’s new site, 2) get tiger’s name out there right before his tournament in a few weeks.

Think about it, everyone in the golf world is talking about this. Every show, every sports blog, every radio program.

It doesn’t matter who was wrong or right…the only thing that matters is how many people are talking about it.

This is just another form of plastering Kim Kardashian’s fat a$@ all over the Internet. It creates a buzz, people click, and a cash register rings on the other end.

I think when my net worth outweighed the value of the magazine that printed the article (especially a magazine that would hardly exist without me), I would have to laugh this off. Of course, I would then purchase the print company and ask them if they’d changed their stance…

  30. Chris Downing

There are some journalists who will write oretty much anythingso long as it creates a good story that the publicwill want to read. Doen’t have to be true, doesn’t have to be based on facts, but it does have to be attention arresting and make people want to read it.

Magazines and Newspapers exist from the revenues they generate from advertisers – so creating a huge audience is what it is all about. If you wnatto be seelingnthe sort of stuff to people who will only read quality newspapers, nthen what you rpint has to be pretty much the truth. If you want to sell to people who are gullible and easily convinced, who don’t really care if the stories are correct – then the advertisers will who want thosesrt of customers will come to you.

The bottom line is there arevalways readers for whatever stories you write and mirrors by avertisers who want to sell to those readers. Truth is a malleable commodity in the media. When golf decided to go for the big money from sponsors and advertisers they opened the door to all this sort of nonsense.

Two (maybe 3) simple points here are easy to see…

    1. If you deny a journalist an interview, they will sometimes go to great lengths to show you the that you have made a mistake.

    2. Jenkins can add a lack of a sense of humor to Tigers faults.

Possible 3rd- Tiger is officially no longer a significant enough personality on the PGA to be immune to this kind of journalistic license

  33. G Rev

    Nov 19, 2014 at 12:40 pm

Honestly, this article is not very funny or scandalous and not really all that hard on Tiger. I think the nastiest lines that Jenkins puts in Tigers mouth, are that he likes to fire people and he’s a bad tipper. And the fact that Jenkins ripped on Sergio and Chamblee for Tiger was pretty sweet (especially the “low cry baby on tour every week” line regarding Sergio – CLASSIC).
Tiger and his peeps missed a great chance here to score some much needed cool points – if he had played along with this article – and said something funny and satirical in response, he could have came away from this looking more human. Instead his retort just seems to prove all the character flaws that Jenkins and many others in the past, have pointed out are true.

+1 G Rev, his reply makes him sound out of touch and quite frankly a crybaby, imagine if every US president acted this way way after an SNL sketch. Political satire in this country is a burning at the stake compared to the meager shots taken in Jenkins’ article.

I initially didn’t read the article because Jenkins wrote it. He hasn’t been funny for a long time. And when did Johnny football become relevant to golf? Might be time to let the subscription expire.

A lot of interesting thoughts in these comments. I agree with some viewpoints on both sides of the argument. Either way, Dan Jenkins did his job by getting Golf Digest in the news (not just golf websites) and garnering major publicity. Be it sleazy or not, Golf Digest is enjoying the uptick in recognition and probable site traffic.

  38. Bill Wood

    Nov 19, 2014 at 12:29 pm

I thought most of the article was entertaining – but crossed the line back and forth a bit. You have to know Jenkins as a writer. Jenkins has never been a Tiger fan – and in some cases he went over the line. Jenkins knows that – but he’s been over the line before.

What people seem to forget is how long all journalists kissed Tiger’s ass hoping to get an interview, the interview that inevitably never came. The piece was humor. It lives and dies on whether it’s funny, not on whether it’s “good journalism.” Tiger’s people must have known the media would criticize him for thin skin and over-reacting. But they saw what seems to be happening: Most average golfers are taking Tiger’s side.

I have a lot of respect for his game, achievements and impact. I learned a long time ago not to judge a man by his words rather than by his actions. Tiger says a lot of the right things and has done a lot of wrong things.

Tiger has benefited greatly from publications, media, writers and broadcasters. He has also systematically tried to control the content revealed about him. Examples: Research his beef with John Feinstein, his attempt to get Chamblee fired, his tiff with Alex Miceli when Alex pressed him in news conference.

Bottom line is this, be real, be authentic, be humble and be honest and none of these things could have been written! They hurt because they are believable. Perception is reality!!!!!

Sources for either “quote”? The rest of what you posted is exactly what I’m talking about…you believe this stuff because you read it somewhere. These articles pull stuff WAY out of context, and the sheep buy into it as if that’s how every minute of every day is. Fact is it probably wasn’t nearly as interesting as the article suggests, but slap Tiger’s name on it and the kids will fight on the internet about it.

The article was both nasty and unfunny: an attempt to tear a man down and nothing more. But I also agree that Tiger should have ignored it. He played right into GD’s ambush and gave it a weight it didn’t earn.

Just another has been writer who was denied an interview many years ago and thought tiger should have been honored to be interviewed by him. Years later, he’s still upset and can’t let it go. It reminiscent of the scorned boyfriend/girlfriend who can’t let it go and won’t go away.

It would be different if the article was at least funny. It was clearly just old tired jokes that at this point, could only be interpreted as doing nothing but being venomous. It’s clear he has an axe to grind against Tiger and he should say it. Instead, he hides behind “it’s Satire.”.

Dan Jenkins is in the World Golf Hall of Fame for Lifetime Achievement. I believe he has covered more Masters than any other writer. He’s written a number of sports/golf books such as Dead Solid Perfect and Semi-Tough. He’s always been a tongue-in-cheek writer and a bit sarcastic. He’s definitely “old school” and I would expect that the answer to the very 1st question (there’s nothing to gain) which is what he was told in the past is the very reason he wrote the article. It is obvious that DJ has little respect for TW the man and has dwindling respect for TW the golfer. He harkens back to a time when it was Hogan, Nelson, Palmer and Nicklaus he interviewed and they cooperated. I find the “interview” not particularly funny nor particularly harsh. It is much ado about nothing in both quarters.

Like others, I read the article with mixed feelings. While I recognize satire, I didn’t think Jenkins was funny or original. This seemed like an article that did not require much imagination or creativity. I would further suggest that Golf Digest should stick to reporting on golf — equipment, tournament previews, travel, playing lessons, etc. Leave the tabloid fodder to the tabloids. If I didn’t get it for free, I would never buy the magazine. The content provided by GolfWRX and the myriad of other sites, more than quenches my thirst for golf-related content.

Maybe it’s just me but I couldn’t finish Jenkins satire because it wasn’t funny and I didn’t find anything really offensive. Jenkins article was stupid at best and when I see stupid articles like Jenkins or ones from golfwrx writers about how Tiger dresses I just assume not much is happening in the golf world. In my opinion it was a tough task for Jenkins to make a comical interview out of someone who just isn’t funny or interesting outside of his golf game. I’m the first one to read every article concerning swing changes or hoping that Tiger will give a real pre or post round interview concerning golf or the state of his game and changes he is making to it in the slight possibility I might learn something from the greatest golfer of my generation.

Jenkins should have brought up the Hank Haney story about Tiger not sharing his popsicles when Hank stayed at Tigers house. Or Elin’s rule about “no TV at dinnertime” … so Tiger would eat in about 2 minutes, then go watch TV.

I am sure none of us mortals can have the same perspective as Tiger about the Jenkins article. And, I do sympathize with him. But, it did make me laugh, even though that may have been Jenkins’s secondary objective.

    • Chris Gar

      Nov 19, 2014 at 11:52 am

It is interesting that people are saying “it went too far” … while at the same time “it is all old, boring stuff.”

I don’t think it went too far at all. Legally, it is more clear it is satire if one “goes overboard … saying outrageous things that couldn’t be true.” In this case, all of the stuff could have been said by Tiger — so it is less clear that this is satire.

I’m a Tiger fan, and I think Tiger has every right to be pissed at Jenkins and GD about that piece. It was unadulterated character assassination. It’s not libelous, but it certainly was appallingly personal and mean-spirited. Jenkins has had a hair across his as* about Tiger for a long time. Maybe because Tiger never gave him that one-on-one interview that Nicklaus and Hogan gave him that helped build his stature among the press corps. Maybe Tiger never gave him that interview because he sensed Jenkins had that hair across his behind to begin with, that Tiger (with the media) dared to eclipse the greatness of Jack and Ben. Who knows? But Jenkins made no effort to hide his contempt for Tiger, his bitterness. And as a result, the article was only “funny” if you hate Tiger, too, and you relish watching the beating. Who wouldn’t be angry to be so treated?

Call it what you want, funny or not it proves what we have known all along, but some so called journalists keep telling us its not. That is TIGER EVEN WHEN HE IS NOT WINNING IS RELEVANT TO GOLF. He gave them what they wanted and craved for ATTENTION.

      Nov 19, 2014 at 12:27 pm

I agree. I read the article, as much as I could get through, and wondered one thing: why is this article in Golf Digest? I don’t care one way or the other about Tiger, but this article was simply dumb, base, and is something you would think would be in a lesser magazine. But, having been a subscriber for about 15 years, I have to say that GD really has become a lesser magazine. I’ve seen it happen to Golfweek, subscribed for 10-12 years, as well but not to this extent of course. They’ve become lowest common denominator products. But I guess they’ve had to because there just aren’t enough people seeking serious golf information to keep this stuff out of what used to be almost industry mags. Now they’re grasping at anything that will catch eyes, golf eyes or any other, and thus driving away serious golfers. GD is trying to compete against Maxim, and they’re not gonna win that one.

  57. BabaBooey

    Nov 19, 2014 at 11:20 am

A seventh grader could have authored this ‘satire.’ DJ belongs at the Enquirer.

  60. Keith

    Nov 19, 2014 at 9:52 am

The bottomline is that it was satire but it wasn’t funny or entertaining and you could obviously feel the butthurt that Jenkins and GD feel seeping into the article.

Tiger and his people completely overreacted and actually did Jenkins and GD a favor. He should’ve said nothing and when he was eventually asked about it he could’ve given a snarky, dismissive answer that would have had a more desired effect than lashing out.

Reporter: Tiger, what did you think of the fake interview article by Dan Jenkins that was published in GD?

Tiger: The name sounds familiar. I’m sorry, I can’t place him. Did he play the tour?

    Game, set , match.

    • Dave

      Nov 19, 2014 at 11:34 am

Tiger’s a legitimate target, but Jenkins’ effort just wasn’t funny – you could pick up a dozen far better “lines” for a piece like that in any 19th hole in twenty minutes – if anyone’s still talking about Tiger at all.

Can’t blame Woods for being peeved; unfunny and mean is just mean.

This article isn’t even funny. Makes both Golf Digest and Dan Jenkins seem bitter that Tiger doesn’t work with any of them. But honestly what would you expect from a golf magazine that put Johnny Football on the cover. Nobody would have even read this article if Tiger didn’t respond to it.

I’ve been passionately pursuing golf for 30 years, read countless articles and books on the topic. I have read an entire article by Dan Jenkins. I can never make it through the nonsense and I don’t find him funny. I know he’s been around forever and likely has many supporters, I just don’t find his satire to be humorous. Everyone of Jenkin’s articles are the same…let me poke fun at someone.

  67. John

    Nov 19, 2014 at 2:39 am

TW needs a new “team” of advisors. Whether you liked the article or not is beside the point at this juncture. Tiger’s response to this is just…so ill advised. It’s just going to drive people who otherwise wouldn’t have even thought about this article, in the off season no less, when no one is paying much attention, to read the thing. Whether they think Tiger is being jobbed or not, they will still come away with the impression that he’s a jerk. Just ignore it, and if asked for comment say something honest, but not controversial like, “I didn’t find it funny, but Mr. Jenkins is entitled to write what he wants”. It then quickly goes away. This is PR 101. Who are these people? They are “yes” men of course, which is exactly what Woods doesn’t need, since his own judgement in these matters is dreadful. TW hasn’t had a mature, intelligent, stand up associate since Butch. The Harmon’s are all class acts. Tiger isn’t. He needs much better advice.

    • Howard

      Nov 19, 2014 at 11:14 am

The irony is that Tiger Woods and his PR team chose to aggressively respond to Jenkins’s clearly labeled satirical piece while ignoring the article in which Johnny Manziel recounted being stiffed for an autograph by Woods when Manziel was 10 years old. Manziel’s story tells you all you need to know about Woods even though Jenkins’s satirical interview is also based largely on true facts.

      • dapadre

        Nov 19, 2014 at 11:30 am

          Nov 19, 2014 at 12:33 pm

Actually it was slander. The entire article was a lie because it never took place and he “fabricated” responses from Tiger. Parodies only work if you have some level of respect for the individual and the reader should be able to feel that the overall tone is comical and in good spirits. But it’s clear from EVERY Q&A in the article that it was meant to be mean spirited and low blows towards Tiger. Personally I don’t even care for Tiger, but this was a low class move by Jenkins. GD magazine was crap to begin with and this just proves that further. Definitely will not be renewing my subscription.

Q: Why do you portray Tiger as a kid who hangs out at a 7 Eleven and drinks slurpees?
Jenkins: Cuz everyone is a kid to me, I’m old.

Q: You do know he’s 39 years old right?
Jenkins: Still a young hippie in my eyes.

Q: Did you know there is no Tomb Raider arcade game?
Jenkins: No, I don’t. I do know that Angelina Jolie is hot. She’s in it right? She really makes my ol’ ticker sing.

Q: That was a movie, but you don’t care do you?
Jenkins: Not really. I just make stuff up. What was that hottie’s name again?

Q: Why haven’t you retired yet? Most people are enjoying retired life at your age.
Jenkins: The AARP wouldn’t take me.

    Q: Care to elaborate?
Jenkins: I wrote a parody interview about the President of the AARP, and he just doesn’t have any sense of humor! Young men these days. So thin skinned. Almost like little girls.

Q: Are you just at that stage where you just don’t give a damn?
    Jenkins: You got that right.

Ok where do I pick up my journalist pass? Maybe I can go interview an actual person with it next time.

In general, Golf related entertainment (except for a few must see tournaments) really sucks. Golf magazines are basically turning into brochures. TGC is going down hill. Did anyone see the last morning show with Alonzo Morning? So bad especially with Gary Williams’ annoying high pitched voice. Also, has anyone seen the golf movie on TGC lately with Robert Duval? That was one of the worst movies I’ve seen in a while. Anyway, I wish ESPN can start a golf specific show or channel.

I read the article in Golf Digest, perhaps a bit interesting, but then I am not a fan of Jenkins and then went on to the next article before I finished it. No big deal, satire and a fake interview, what else is new with Jenkins. Now it explodes due to Tiger’s team being upset by it. I do not understand the strategy, the best way to give publicity to an article that would and had otherwise gone unnoticed by most is to ignore it. I think Tiger’s camp made a big mistake in that now everyone wants to read the article that most, like me, would have ignored five minutes after reading it.

  76. Ira Shoff

It’s a damn shame these so called writers are allowed to make up lies to write a ‘sensational’ story, when none is available. There’s virtually no truth in this story whatsoever. Any man reading this would be uspset if the tale were about them. We can agree or disagree with a man’s actions, but it don’t give us the right to make up *lies* about that man.

  77. Todd

    Nov 18, 2014 at 9:45 pm

First off, these satirical interviews are nothing new. Second, the content was on-point. That’s what made it pretty funny. At Tiger’s expense, of course. Very few writers have had the balls to point out who the REAL Tiger Woods. Strangely, from most public opinion I see, TV golf fans don’t want to know about it.

    • cNo

      Nov 18, 2014 at 10:31 pm

I honestly don’t care to know about his personal life. I’m a fan of how he hits the golf ball (and other tour pros). He is human like me and has made mistakes like me. Big deal. That is not news IMO and should not be reported (and least not in 2014). Scandal is long gone. Jenkins should be reporting on a real golf topic like why idiots don’t fix their ball marks and someone else’s instead of attacking TW for no apparent reason. Articles like his are useless.

I just read the article. What’s the big deal? He gave Tiger some s*&t. If Tiger can’t handle that then he needs, to toughen up. Nice Tiger worship article Andy…your writing sucks. O, I’m sorry, did I hurt your feelings?

Golf Digest and Golf Magazine are desperate. Cant remember the last time I bought one. Holly Sonders, Gretzky and thank god for instagram female golfers photos for last stand content to throw up content that might draw readers back. They need controversy to stay relevant today. Without it they will have to lay off another wave sooner than they want. Called preservation. Sad to have this in the game of Golf though. Golf is a class act and this isnt. I would be pissed to if I was Tiger. I am surprised they can legally use photos like that… looks like him near the car.

I wonder if Golf Digest would have the same attitude if someone wrote a “fake interview” filled with that much spite about them?

Tiger is obviously butt hurt that a golf writer poked fun at his expense. He’s oversensitive anyways. Once again Tiger, instead of laughing at yourself and having some fun with it, you manage to make yourself look like an idiot. Way to go!!!

Great article Andrew! “so 2009” how funny! Yeah the biggest question is why anyone is even talking about TW right now. I mean at present he is Mr. Irrelevant. Maybe for a follow-up Jenkins could satire David Duvcal.

If Woods doesn’t like the criticism, then don’t do things to be criticized about.

Woods has earned everything he gets.

Try jumping off of the bandwagon and make him find a sense of humour.

“If Woods doesn’t like the criticism, then don’t do things to be criticized about.”

That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. There is literally no way for anyone to ever avoid doing things that someone won’t criticize them about.

Really Tom, is it? You must be the all knowing and also the only judge of what is right and wrong. Please forgive us all for being so flawed.

I still think it is hilarious, and I am drinking from my Perkin’s cup right now as I type this.

If you get knocked in the face by a 9 iron, after wrecking your Tahoe into a fire hydrant because you were running from your wife after she found out that you were shagging a Perkin’s waitress, then you deserve to be made fun of and have people laugh at you.

You realize that there was a lot more to the golf digest article than just that incident right? He criticized Tiger for winning majors when there was no competition. Explain to me how he could have avoided that barb? That he had some friends like Mark O’Meara he doesnt hang with. Sorry, I don’t know anyone who doesnt have old friends that they aren’t close with anymore. It was a little bit more than making fun of him for having an affair.

Morning 9: Scheffler repeats at Players | Monday PIF meeting | McIlroy takes another shot at Norman

Published

on

By Ben Alberstadt with Gianni Magliocco.

For comments: [email protected]

Good Monday morning, golf fans, as an exciting final day at the Players Championship saw Scottie Scheffler retain his title.

1. Back to back, X2

Doug Ferguson for AP…”The roar could be heard from a half-mile away just 16 minutes after the final group set out Sunday in the final round of The Players Championship. It was loud enough to indicate something special had happened. The question was more “what” than “who.”

  • “Moments later, Scottie Scheffler’s name appeared on the leaderboard, and he was on his way, adding another layer to his legend as the best in golf.”
  • “His 8-under 64 tied the Players Championship record for best Sunday score by a winner. His five-shot comeback matched another tournament record. And he now stands alone as the only back-to-back champion in 50 years of the PGA Tour’s premier championship.”
  • “It’s tough enough to win one Players,” said Scheffler, who was coming off a five-shot victory last week at Bay Hill. “So to have it back-to-back is extremely special. Yeah, really thankful.”
Full piece.

2. Cantlay confirms Monday meeting

Golfweek’s Adam Woodard…”On Friday, Golfweek was first to report a group of PGA Tour players were nearing a meeting with the head of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund in an effort to continue to broker a deal between the Tour and the controversial sovereign wealth fund that has been disrupting men’s professional golf.”

  • “Two sources told Eamon Lynch a meeting was tentatively scheduled for Monday at a private residence in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, following the conclusion of the Players Championship at nearby TPC Sawgrass. Patrick Cantlay, a player director on the PGA Tour policy board, confirmed the meeting with Sports Illustrated on Sunday and tabbed the event as a meet-and-greet.”
  • “Well, I’ve gotta hear out what they have to say, and I will always do my best to represent the entire membership whenever I am in a meeting in that capacity,” Cantlay told SI after his final round at the Players Championship. “I think more information is always better.”
Full piece.

3. Mystery abounds

Golf Channel’s Rex Hoggard…”It turns out Monday’s expected “secret” meeting between the PGA Tour policy board player directors and the governor of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund is even clandestine for those who are being “strongly encouraged” to attend.”

  • “I don’t even think our membership knows anything about a meeting on Monday yet. I don’t know the details of it,” said Peter Malnati, one of the six player directors who would meet with the fund’s governor, Yasir Al-Rumayyan, on Monday in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. “I would rather tell our membership first, but, honestly, I think at this point I probably should have more details because there may be a meeting but I don’t even know. I don’t know where it is or how I’m getting there.”
  • “The possible meeting, which was first reported by Golfweek.com and would take place in a private residence, would be the first time the player directors have met with anyone from the PIF. Malnati said Tour commissioner Jay Monahan has been pushing for a face-to-face meeting between the players and Al-Rumayyan “for months.”
Full piece.

4. McIlroy takes aim at Norman

Jack Milko for SB Nation…”McIlroy still wants to see a deal between the PGA Tour and the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) go through.

But he holds no remorse for LIV Golf’s CEO, Greg Norman.”

  • “They’re a sovereign wealth fund. They want to park money for decades and not worry about it,” McIlroy said of the PIF.
  • “They want to invest in smart and secure businesses, and the PGA Tour is definitely one of those, especially if they’re looking to invest in sport in some way… I have spent time with [PIF Governor] Yasir [al-Rumayyan]. I think the people who have represented him in LIV have done him a disservice, so Norman and those guys.”
  • “Norman has championed LIV Golf’s cause for more than two years now, celebrating its format, players, and how the Saudi-backed circuit continues to ‘change the game.’
Full piece.

5. Boo birds

Bunkered report…”Jay Monahan was booed at The PLAYERS Championship as some golf fans made their feelings clear on the PGA Tour commissioner.

Monahan has been under fire ever since blindsiding his players with a top-secret framework agreement with the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund which bankrolls LIV Golf last June.”

  • “He confirmed in his pre-tournament address at TPC Sawgrass that negotiations were “accelerating” with the sovereign wealth fund over a deal to unify the game.”
Full Piece.

6. Scheffler first in money won at The Players

Todd Kelly for Golfweek…”With a first-place prize of $4.5 million on the line, Scheffler came from five shots back on Sunday to win the 2024 Players Championship. And with that, he took over the top spot for most money won in a career at the PGA Tour’s flagship event at TPC Sawgrass.”

  • “Scheffler was previously third all-time at the Players with more than $4.5 million (with most of that earned for winning there in 2023) but now he’s over the $9 million mark.”
  • “He takes over the top spot from Sergio Garcia. Tiger Woods slides from the second to third.”

Tour Rundown: Matching luggage for Scheffler

Published

on

For those of us from another generation, the disruption of the golf world that we knew well is both exciting and unsettling. The two most potent disruptors are rival golf leagues, not unlike the turmoil seen in the NCAA, and the Anchorman-style gangs of golf reporters. Reconciled to a past era are the dominance of the U.S. PGA Tour and the monthly golf magazines. One element that will not change, at any time in the foreseeable future, however, is the sanctity of the grand slam and golf’s four male major championships. While the LPGA and the PGA Tour Champions have seen a light and added fifth and sixth power titles, the men’s game remains staunchly in the 20th century.

This last topic surges in pertinence each March, just before the playing of The Players Championship. Two camps stake tents and run banners up the poll. One cries out for elevation of the PC to major status, while the other digs a trench around its impregnable quadrilateral. My personal take is this: Every four years since 2016, golf is played at the Olympics. Is Olympic Gold the equivalent of a major title? Yes, it is. It comes around every 1,500 days and brings elite golfers together in competition at the most important athletic event and venue. In my mind, Justin Rose and Xander Schauffele earned major titles in Brazil and Japan, as did Inbee Park and Nelly Korda. As for the Players Championship, why not? The field is stronger by ranking than any major event, and the golf course demands every shot that golfers can create.

The Players Championship is so important to the U.S. PGA Tour that all other tours under its umbrella take the week off. No Korn Ferry, no Tour Champions. The LPGA and the DP World Tour follow suit, which shrinks the amount of watchable golf to two events. On that sour note, let’s run down this week’s play, beginning with the Players Championship and ending with the Asian Tour in Macau.

PGA Tour @ Players Championship: matching luggage for Scheffler

Scottie Scheffler is making a bid to be the player of his generation. From the previous one, a fair number have taken leave from traditional competition. The Johnsons, Koepkas, and Reeds from the 1980s no longer play the events that stand the test of time. The born-in-the-90s generation had its first great champion in Jordan Spieth until he took leave of the senses that brought him to golf’s pinnacle. Spieth’s descent ran opposite Scheffler’s rise.

Scottie Scheffler had won nothing on the PGA Tour until February 13th of 2022. He won on that day in Phoenix, then won three more times by the middle of April. One of those wins was the API at Bay Hill. Last week, Scheffler won for a second time at the Orlando course. Last March, Scheffler won his first Players Championship, by five shots over Tyrrell Hatton. On Sunday, Scheffler dived headfirst into a cauldron of fierce competition. Facing challenges from Olympic champion Schauffele, Open champion Brian Harmon, and U.S. Open champion  Wyndham Clark, Scheffler breathed. As the only man to reach 20 under par, he earned a second consecutive title at Sawgrass and reminded us that it has been two years since he won the Masters and that he is on a tear.

It all began at the fourth on Sunday for Scheffler. After pars at the opening three holes, Scheffler’s driving wedge from 92 yards landed 20 feet shy of the hole, took one large bounce, then spun left, trickling into the hole for eagle. He followed that incantation with another birdie, then two pars. The stretch from 8 to 12 was where the champion made a statement. His quartet of birdies over that run, brought him to 19-under par and let the pursuing pack know that even lower than the winning 17 under in 2023 would be necessary.

And the trio was game. Harman and Clark both dipped below 70, to reach 19 under at the final pole. Schauffele could not find a similar gear and closed with 70 — 69 would have earned him a playoff with Scheffler. It was the extra gear, the ability to go low when all things mattered, that eleveated the now two-time champion to the top of the podium. In five of his eight tour wins, Scheffler has posted a sub-70 round on day four, and four of those have been 67 or lower.

With elegant precision, Scheffler applied the final thrust at the par-5 16th. He played safely away from Pete’s Pond on the right, into the left greenside bunker at the back of the putting surface. His bunker shot was thing of exquisite accuracy, trickling to a planned stop about 20 inches from the hole. The birdie concluded matters and rang the sort of bell that Dye courses tend to display.

Asian Tour @ International Series Macau: Catlin earns playoff victory

There are two sorts of golfers that compete on the Asian Tour, which makes no secret of its alliance with the LIV. The first are the AT stalwarts, the ones who play as golfers have always played, with little guarantee and much pride. The others are the ones who compete on the LIV, eschewing both risk and pride for the guaranteed payday. Their deal costs them world ranking points, so they play in AT events, hoping to qualify for golf’s major events.

This week in Macau, one of those LIV golfers shot 60 on Sunday and did not win the tournament. Hard to believe, you say? Aye, but when another golfer shoots 59 in the third round, follows it up with a 65 on day four, then makes overtime birdie twice at the par-five closer, the razor’s edge of great golf is sharpened. Thus did it happen with American John Catlin and Spaniard David Puig.

It was Catlin who signed for 59, and it took a twisting, eagle putt at the last to enshrine the first-ever, sub-60 on the Asian Tour. It was Puig who closed the gap on Sunday with a 60 of his own, which featured a bogey at the lengthy fifth hole, but was followed by seven birdies and an eagle over the next 13 holes. Catlin had a six-feet putt for the regulation win, but missed. In extra time, Puig nearly holed for eagle at 18, then tapped in for birdie. Catlin’s second danced along the OOB perimeter, before ending on an access road. His drop and pitch left him another six feet to remain alive, and this time, he converted.

At the second go-round of the par-5 finisher, Puig found the green in two, but took three putts from nearly 50 feet. Catlin confronted another challenging pitch for his third, and once again, his wedge game won the day. He tapped in for birdie and the win.

Morning 9: Rory, Xander, Clark share Players lead | Rory on controversial drop | AK misses Macau cut

Published

on

By Ben Alberstadt with Gianni Magliocco.

For comments: [email protected]

Good Friday morning, golf fans, as day two of the Players Championship gets underway from TPC Sawgrass!

1. McIlroy grabs share of the lead

ESPN’s Mark Schlabach…”Despite hitting two tee shots into the water and being at the center of a controversial drop after the second one, four-time major champion Rory McIlroy opened the 50th Players Championship with a 7-under 65 to grab a share of the first-round lead Thursday.”

  • “McIlroy, the 2019 Players Championship winner, was tied atop the leaderboard with Xander Schauffele and reigning U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark, who had much more uneventful opening rounds at TPC Sawgrass.”
Full piece.

2. Xander and Clark also fire 65

Ali Stafford for Sky Sports…“Schauffele, playing in the group ahead of McIlroy, charged up the leaderboard with five birdies in a six-hole stretch around the turn to make a bogey-free start to the week and set the initial clubhouse target.”

  • “The pair held a share of the lead until Clark produced a spectacular back-nine birdie run, where he rolled in from 20 feet at the 15th before taking advantage of the par-five next and birdied the 17th to join the group on seven under.”
Full piece.

3. McIlroy drop debate

Golf Channel’s Brentley Romine…”McIlroy rinsed two tee balls into the water, the first at TPC Sawgrass’ par-4 18th hole and the second on the par-4 seventh. While the former prompted some discussion, the latter produced an especially lengthy back-and-forth between McIlroy and the other two players, as the trio spent more than eight minutes trying to determine where McIlroy should drop.”

  • “Initially, the walking ESPN+ reporter said that McIlroy’s caddie, Harry Diamond, said that McIlroy’s ball “absolutely” hit above the red penalty line before kicking into the water left of a long fairway bunker. The one television camera angle showed McIlroy’s ball clearly bouncing once, though it was unclear where exactly it pitched.”
  • “That’s an emphatic 250-yard difference,” an announcer said of where McIlroy was looking to drop, and where he’d have to drop, had his ball not crossed in play.”
  • “It bounced into the water but we were just trying to make sure that it was above the red line,” McIlroy shouted over to his playing competitors, who were inquiring about his thought process.”
Full piece.

4. Beall: Time for a different system?

Golf Digest’s Joel Beall…”Reputations in golf are a fickle thing, and to compromise them for what may or may not have happened hundreds of yards away is an avoidable gamble. Perhaps McIlroy should have been more open to what his opponents were saying, yet there’s a case that he shouldn’t have had to defend himself in the first place; that should have fallen to a rules official. And the current system isn’t just failing the player whose score is in question. It shouldn’t fall to opponents to police the field, for that responsibility can put them in awkward, uncomfortable positions that can simultaneously put them in an unfavorable light.”

  • “Just because this is how golf has always done it doesn’t mean it has to be this way in perpetuity. It’s a change easier said than done, one that requires more rules officials and more cameras, two resources that are not in plentiful supply. But this week the PGA Tour is returning its Every Shot At broadcast option and its new television center opens up a world of possibility for how the tour is watched … and in some cases, reviewed.”
  • “Much of the conversation this week has been about the tour product, specifically, how it can be enhanced and refined. But the tour’s primary product is its players, and what the tour wants to improve also needs to be protected. In this case, that means protecting them from themselves. Something so valuable shouldn’t be vulnerable to five minutes.”
Full piece.

5. Tom Kim out with illness

Golf Channel report…”Tom Kim withdrew Thursday after eight holes of the opening round of The Players Championship. The PGA Tour sent out a social media post citing an unspecified illness as the reason.”

  • “Kim, who started on the back nine on the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, was 5 over par at the time, including two bogeys and a triple bogey.”
Full Piece.

6. Owen Wilson poised to play golf’s Ted Lasso

Hollywood Reporter…”The streamer behind Ted Lasso has placed a series order for a show starring Owen Wilson as a former pro golfer who needs to get his life back in order. The Loki star will also be an executive producer of the untitled series, which comes from Apple Studios and creator Jason Keller (Ford v. Ferrari).

  • “Wilson will play Pryce Cahill, whose golf career ended prematurely 20 years ago. After he gets fired from his job at a sporting goods store in Indiana and his wife leaves him, Pryce sees a troubled 17-year-old golf phenom as his way back.”
Full Piece.

7. AK one of five to miss Macau cut

Paul Higham for Golf Monthly…”Although he was four shots better in his second round, Anthony Kim still came unstuck at the International Series in Macau as he missed his first professional cut in 12 years.”

  • “Kim was one of 21 LIV Golf League stars teeing it up at Macau Golf & Country Club, and one of five to miss the cut along with Harold Varner, Danny Lee, Eugenio Chacarra and Graeme McDowell.”
  • “The American improved from his opening 74 with a second-round 70, but still finished on four over which saw him miss the cut by eight shots.”
