GolfWRX Tournament Coverage – Sony Open

Published

on

Thanks to valued GolfWRX member Pitbull808, we have received hundreds of pictures from the Sony Open.

The Sony Open this week is the first full field event on the PGA Tour. After the winter layoff, much of the anticipated 2008 equipment has begun showing up on Tour. Some of the exciting pictures include the new Cameron Fastback, Squareback, Titleist’s new AP 2 irons, Cobra’s Pro CB’s, and and new Wilson Staff Prototypes. Thanks to the hard work of Pitbull808, GolfWRX has in depth coverage of everything that’s new at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu. To view the entire picture collection, and discuss in our forums, click on the following threads: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3.

Putters

Quite a few new putters were seen among the pictures. Scotty was there at the practice tee with his new Squareback and Fastback models.

Also, there are new pictures of Odyssey’s new Black i putter line which has a body milled from carbon steel and has a firmer insert than the XG series. Also pictured is the newly introduced Sabertooth.

Irons

There were several new iron pictures. Especially interesting is the Wilson prototype muscle back clubs.

With the impending release of the AP series of irons, Titleist is expecting many of its players to begin switching over to the new forgiving but still player oriented AP2 iron.

Drivers

Although many of the 2008 releases seem to center around irons and putters, there are some new driver releases expected. Among them are the new Nike SQ Sumo 5000 and Square 5900 drivers pictured in the threads. These drivers have already been in use by Nike staffers such as Stephen Ames and should be released early in February.

Course Pictures

But it’s not just equipment that we’ve covered. Pitbull808 was also kind enough to provide us with course pictures from Waialae Country Club. Simply watching the tournament on TV, it is diffcult to fully appreciate the narrow fairways and beautiful scenery that surrounds Waialae. However, Pitbull808’s pictures do a tremendous job capturing it.

Some of the biggest names in golf have taken home the title here, including Arnold Palmer, Ben Hogan, Lee Trevino, and Ben Crenshaw.
