Odyssey ProType Tour 2-Ball Putter Review

Published

on

Early Review by Min (full Review coming)

The model reviewed is the ProType Tour Series in the 2-Ball model at 34″. So here is a short review from my findings on the putting green yesterday. Although the putting green is pretty poor at Sandown Park Direct Golf where I bought it, so watch out for a more full on course review coming up soon. (The ball used was a Srixon Z-Star)

Looks:
The ProType Tour putter has a satin silver finish, this gives the putter a very classic look and whilst understated there is a unique quality to it. I’m assuming the satin finish is also to reduce glare off the putter on a sunny day.

The look from the top is somewhat similar in finish to most odyssey putters along with the familiar two ball alignment aid on top.

However what really caught my eye in terms of design is how Odyssey, maintained somewhat a raw look to the putter as if it’s still in development. Almost as if it’s a Prototype of the ProType line.

On the Sole it has a forged carbon steel plate which is attached on using screws that are exposed with what appears to be a black weight on the back of the putter, leaving the space in the middle hollow.

Performance / Sound / Feel I have been a big fan of Odyssey 2-ball putters, it’s stable and the alignment aid really gives you the confidence to putt the ball down the line you picked out. However there was 2 things I used to dislike about the Odyssey 2-ball putters. First one is weight and second one is the insert.

Maybe it’s a personal thing but 2-ball putters before used to feel a little too light for me, but the 360g ProType 2-ball feel dead on, not too heavy to deaden the feel, but heavy enough to have the extra stability I desire.

I was never a huge fan of the odyssey inserts, both the white hot & the firmer white ice insert. The soft balata inserts coupled with so urethane covered tour balls made the putters too soft and unresponsive. Especially the white hot insert giving it a mushy, “did I just hit the ball?” feel to the putter. I have always had a problem with distance control with the soft tour ball + soft insert combination.

Now Odyssey has completely remedied that with the soft forged 1025 carbon steel putter with a deep milled face. This gives the putter a soft yet crisp feel. The precision milled face with the deep milled grooves helps the ball interact with the face of the putter rather than bouncing off. The deep milled face imparts top spin on the ball helping it to run true with less negative spin.

Thanks to the added responsiveness of the putter, I could put a good roll on the ball and the ball consistently rolled out the distance I wanted it to.

Having owned Scotty Cameron’s, Bettianrdi’s, etc in the past, I would have to say Odyssey really out performed themselves this time and I believe the new ProType Tour putters are up there with the rest of them.

One thing I didn’t like about the putter was the grip. Although not a bad grip, the Odyssey ProType Tour putter come with the new Lamkin 3Gen grip in black and red in a pistol grip style.

It’s a very nice looking grip and whilst it feel nice, it is a bit too thin. I’m not sure if I’m just used to a chunkier putter grip or this one is especially thinner than most putter grips but I’m going to be swopping the grip out soon but I love everything else about it.

Even the head cover, which is magnetic now not Velcro, thanks god. Unlike most Odyssey head covers looks great and has an exclusive feel to it.

Anyway can’t wait to try it out for a few rounds this weekend, keep your eyes peeled for a on course review.

More information:

The ProType line was born out of unique putters crafted to the exacting standards of tour level professionals. The Odyssey design team has taken the feedback from many elite pros and developed putters that enhance feel and offer a great look and performance.

1025 Carbon Steel Head
Produces similar performance characteristics to stainless steel with a softer feel. Deeper, sharper milling pattern on the putter face increases interaction between the face and the ball for better feel, truer roll and more consistency

Proven Tour Headshapes Feedback from Tour pros provided design insights that allowed the ProWorks team to create the most finely tuned putters Odyssey can make. Precise craftsmanship creates ideal balance to promote a smooth stroke.

Headweight Optimization
Tour-tuned weight ports in the sole optimize the putter head with the shaft length. Helps optimize feel, control and accuracy.

Satin Finish
High polish steel provides classic beauty. Designed to meet the demands of Tour players seeking a modern take on a traditional look.

Lamkin 3GEN Pistol Grip
Thin, smaller pistol shape appeals to better players. Made of Lamkin’s proprietary 3GEN material, which is their softest synthetic rubber compound and reduces vibration without dulling the feel of the putt. Allows golfers to keep forearms relaxed, apply very light grip pressure and minimize hand tension for smooth, consistent strokes.

ProType Tour Series 2-Ball an extended mallet head with a double-bend shaft and full-shaft offset.

Custom Colors
Golfers will have the opportunity to truly personalize their putter by selecting among six different colors for their grips and putter head paint fill.

This putter is unreal. It has a smooth feel and the milling creates an excellent roll. Worth it.

Best hybrids 2024: Expert fitters recommend the hybrids for your game

Published

on

At GolfWRX, we believe the best hybrid for your game is going to be the one that gives you the greatest opportunity to both score and save shots during your round of golf.

In 2024, we have seen a continued expansion of hybrid options from every manufacturer with models designed to fit golfers of all skill levels and clubhead speeds. Some manufacturers offer models all the way down to 8-iron-replacement lofts.

That being said, ultimately the best way to find the best hybrid or hybrids for you is to work with a professional fitter using a launch monitor and gap them accordingly. The difficult part is a lot of people don’t have easy access to fitters, launch monitors, and club builders — so at GolfWRX, we have done a lot of the work for you.

We want to give you the tools and information to go out and find what works best for you, and we’re offering recommendations based on exactly what you need from your hybrids.

We have again broken our 2024 best hybrid list into two categories.

  • Best hybrid for golfers seeking forgiveness
  • Best hybrid for golfers seeking versatility

We reached out to our trusted fitters to discuss how they sort through the hybrid club options available to golfers. Forgiveness and versatility were the highest-ranked choices.

Most versatile hybrids of 2024

Titleist TSR2

“Forgiving speed and performance,” is the branding for the TSR2. TSR2 hybrids remain slightly longer with a classical shape. Center of gravity is lower and deeper in the TSR2 for higher launch and maximum forgiveness.

Ping G430

In all of the G430 fairway woods and hybrids, Ping developed Carbonfly Wrap in a bid to deliver more distance by positioning the CG closer to the face line in design to maximize ball speed, resulting in higher, longer carries. The lightweight composite crown wraps into the heel and toe sections of the skirt, creating weight savings of 10 grams, which are reallocated to achieve a lower CG and increase ball speed.

Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke

Leveraging the company’s new Ai Smart Face, Callaway’s Paradym Ai Smoke hybrid has been reshaped and features a larger profile for greater forgiveness and a refined sole camber for better turf interaction. The Tungsten Speed Cartridge is positioned in the front of the club for lower spin and ease of launch.

TaylorMade Qi10 Rescue

The Qi10 Rescue is designed with an all-new Carbon Crown that helps free up weight for improved weight distribution in the heads. The club has split internal weighting to achieve more distance and a higher launch.

TaylorMade Qi10 Tour Rescue

The Qi10 Tour Rescue model features a C300 face with a more compact look and a higher-toe design. It’s designed for better players who seek to combine distance and control with iron-like turf interaction, workability, and precision.

Most forgiving hybrids of 2024

TaylorMade Qi10 Max Rescue

Qi10 Max Rescue clubs are designed with all-new Carbon Crowns that help free up weight for improved weight distribution in the heads. The Qi10 Max has an ultra-low CG (center of gravity) and a shallow face height for even higher launch and greater forgiveness.

Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke HL

Designed for players with moderate to average swing speeds who are looking to hit the ball higher to maximize carry distance, the Paradym Ai Smoke HL leverages the company’s new Ai Smart Face. It features a larger profile for greater forgiveness and a refined sole camber for better turf interaction. The Tungsten Speed Cartridge is positioned in the front of the club for lower spin and ease of launch.

Ping G430

Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke Max Fast

The Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke Max Fast is designed for moderate-swing-speed players. In addition to Ai Smart Face, Max Fast features a larger profile for greater forgiveness and a refined sole camber for better turf interaction. The Tungsten Speed Cartridge is positioned in the front of the club for lower spin and ease of launch.

Titleist TSR1

Titleist’s new TSR1 hybrids are built with a larger, “wood-like” size to help golfers find more speed and forgiveness. They’re also built 0.5 inches longer than standard to provide additional assistance in creating speed.
