Nike launches new Vapor iron line

Published

on

Nike launched its new Vapor line of irons that include the Nike Pro, Nike Pro Combo and Nike Speed on stage at Liberty National with Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods and Jimmy Fallon.

The irons have technology that moves its center of gravity (CG) more toward the toe than Nike’s previous irons, positioning it in the center of the face. The company is calling the design “Modern Muscle Technology,” and the design includes black-colored PVD that is accented by a “Volt” colored Nike swoosh sign.

According to Nike, the more-centered CG puts more weight behind the golf ball at impact to improve energy transfer, precision and stability.

“We had this idea, if we moved the CG towards the center of the face that it would have more impact and more mass right behind the golf ball.” Tiger Woods said. “And it worked. I was able to hit the ball a little bit further, it came off more solid and the amazing thing is the ball flew better.”

Click here to see in-hand photos and other photos from the launch with Tiger, Rory and Fallon.

Nike Vapor Pro

NikeVaporPro

Nike Vapor Pro irons have forward weighting for a lower trajectory, with a longer blade length and shorter face height than their predecessors. They also have milled X3X grooves, a thin sole for better maneuverability through the turf and they are forged from 1025 carbon steel. The Pro line will be available for $999 on retail in right and left-handed options in 3-PW stock with true Temper Dynamic Gold shafts.

Nike Vapor Pro Combo

NikeVaporProCombo

The Vapor Pro Combo irons also utilize face-centered weighting, with a low-and-rearward CG in the long irons for a higher trajectory and high and forward CG in the short irons for a more penetrating ball flight. The 2-7 irons will have what Nike calls a “RZN” cavity back, while the 8-A will have a muscle cavity.

They combine 1025 carbon steel forging with RZN cavity, have milled X3X grooves are available in right and left-handed options (except the 2-iron, which is only available in RH) and come stock with a True Temper DG Pro shaft. They carry an MSRP of $1099.

Nike Vapor Speed

NikeVaporSpeed

The Vapor Speed irons utilize face-centered weighting that’s consistently low and forward throughout the set for a higher launch. The long irons (3-7) have hollow cavity backs are reinforced with a “FlyBeam” behind the face for forgiveness, while the 8-SW short irons have RZN cavity backs. The irons will have a moderate sole width and X3X milled grooves on the face.

They will be available in 3-SW for both right and left handed players, and come stock with a True Temper Dynalite 105 for men and an MRC Fubuki Z 70 shaft for women. They carry an MSRP of $959.99 with steel shafts and $1,059.99 with graphite.

    Dear fellow golfers,
My name is Jerry and i just recently made golfing my life. I used to go golf as a kid but never took it serious or never had anyone mentor me and never have had any of my own clubs or equipment . Now I’m grown and until just recently at the beginning of this summer I started going golfing and it just stuck too me and I haven’t done anything else since. I love golf like I love my family now that I understand it and finally was able to afford my own set of clubs and equipment. I haven’t had any help at all with anything I have done involving golf. I have been alone and on my own when it comes to deciding what to buy and what to do so I have a lot of questions I would love to talk to someone who knows golf and can help me. I don’t want to sound pathetic but I think I’m making big mistakes because golf isn’t cheap and I already spent over a Grand and I don’t know if I made any right decisions yet. Please email me if you would like to help me out. It will be tremendously appreciated more then I can explain !!!!! ….email- [email protected]

Don’t forget! – You need to rush out and buy new clubs every time a manufacturer tells you they have something new. After hitting many newer cavity-backed, perimeter-weighted, “forgiving” irons, I still choose to play 1968 Wilson Staffs. (we used to just call them golf clubs – now to distinguish them from the modern crap, we have to refer to them as “blades” or “muscle-backs”.

    It ain’t the arrow…

Man, that colour really caught my attention, though. Nike has done a good job on getting that it done.

I find it interesting that there are quite a few who say “simply” because of the color of swoosh. As mentioned before, it could be painted, or removed. I’m sure nike considered red/black, but eventually things become tired, and they went bold and succeeded as everyone is seeing what they are doing like it or not.
I personally can’t wait for a set… I know I would, but if Mizuno changed the paintfill in “mizuno” in my mp-64’s tomorrow to pink, they would still be in my bag. They are one the greatest sets of irons, and after playing, color couldn’t take them out of my bag. So who knows, once vapors are played, I’m sure many will look past the chartreuse swoosh as long as they benefit your game/confidence.

    Quotes of the past:

“A white driver head? No way in #@^% would I ever play a driver with a white driver head.”

“A slot in the sole? That is the stupidest thing i have ever seen. No way I would use that club.”

Many people made comments of this type about Taylormade and their clubs but the majority of them purchased and played the equipment anyways. Taylormade made bold decisions in golf equipment design that changed golf and the way people perceive the game. Decisions like those are what catapulted Taylormade into the #1 spot in golf equipment sales. Nike is trying to do the same by thinking outside the traditional lines of what golf clubs are supposed to look like. Adding radical colors, names, and designs is what will grab the attention of the masses and hopefully drive Nike sales up. I personally like the design and like the direction Nike Golf is headed.

For all the haters, you’re untitled to your own opinions about shoulda, coulda, woulda. Traditionalists are still living in the past, dated and past their expiry date. Are you still driving the same car or wearing the same clothes you did 10-15 years ago? Hard to stay present and accept change when you’re stuck in yesterville. I play mp’33’s and have and updated driver and putter combo. It’s all about the evolution of golf from being a hobby to a full-on lifestyle and the style of the clubs in this present moment. I will prolly move to these irons when they release as it’s about the game itself and not the commentators of the game.

What makes a blade/CB of yesterday any different from a blade/CB from today? The only difference I can think of is that my Hogans were made in the USA.

They look really sweet and effective as tiger ses but i think its a little to pricey considering that the mmprotos just came out and that other brands might come out with better products that will be even more effective than the vapors.

In regard to looks, the Vapor’s are young and edgy. It’s different and kudos to Nike for thinking differently. Still, I’m sticking with my VR Pro Blades. I’m finally shooting in the 70’s and low 80’s consistently on different courses each week …why in the world would I change when putting and chipping is the different between sing;e and scratch. Still going to try them though.

Who gives a crap about a green/yellow swoosh, its only aesthetics! You’ll never see it at address, the only time you see it is when its coming in and out of your bag. If an off-colour swoosh bothers you that much then you are in no place mentally to be playing golf in the first place.

If the clubs can knock strokes off your handicap by being longer and more forgiving but just as workable as your current gamer irons then who cares what they look like?

Its UGLY as Hell.. What Nike is thinking!!! They need new desighner ASAP.
What is NIKE’s market for those club, who will by them? Kids 5-10 years old and some people with no taste at all? I can understand if these clubs are for begginers and Set of clubs cost 150$. But not this…

I actually don’t mind the ping look and I think their S55’s are one of the best looking players irons on the market. The Nike irons, not so much.

      • Sammy Moon

        Aug 20, 2014 at 5:14 pm

I actually don’t think they look too bad. They are a bit creative and artsy, but they seem to follow a modernistic architecture and other than the swoosh, they are pretty clean. Won’t be buying them, but they definitely have my attention and I’ll try them.

  18. SBoss

    Aug 19, 2014 at 8:49 pm

If Nike needed to put their swoosh on the club that’s OK. But, the size of the swoosh is absurd. A very small yellow swoosh would have been noticeable but slightly understated. Most people don’t want a giant logo blaring some their irons…especially one that’s bright yellow..

At current prices (over $1,000), and huge loud yellow swoosh….and TW playing like garbage….Nike is in some difficulty. I’ll bet these things linger on the shelves.

Taylormade made their clubs white for brand recognition.

The “Titleist” moniker on the back of ALL of their irons is much larger than this swoosh.

Colors are a matter of preference. Nike has a tendency to sell to athletes–and that color is pretty popular right now.

    • Mitchell Beck

      Aug 22, 2014 at 2:19 pm

No accident that it’s a big yellow swoosh, based on the belts, shoes, hats, and other bright yellow things that Rory has been willing. The old swooshes were red…

How many golf tournaments has Tiger and Rory won with Nike clubs? Yet people on here still talk like they are a Wal-Mart brand golf company. I could really care less about the color of a tiny swoosh on the back of my clubs that I only see when they are sitting in my bag. If Tiger Woods is talking about how great these clubs are there must be something to them, Tiger is notoriously hard to get to change equipment.
Saw some Vapor headcovers, would like to see the woods!!

    • Clue

      Aug 19, 2014 at 6:46 pm

Yes he is notorious. He requires custom drivers, that he can’t hit. He has only used a certain number of blades…all forged by the same company and in no way the same as nike publicizes for the public. You really think tigers clubs are anywhere similar to what nike offers the public? I believe the new vapors are interesting for sure, but don’t use tiger as an example, rory is much more likely to use normal equipment, he’s doesn’t require special equipment to be good

      • B

        Aug 19, 2014 at 9:32 pm

So….did you just indirectly state that TW wouldn’t be good at this game if he played a retail set of clubs?

      • Connor

        Aug 22, 2014 at 8:53 am

I’ve read Rory’s woods are custom with deeper faces which he prefers. He has a custom satin finish on his irons. His putter is a prototype. Not playing clubs off the shelves like you might think.

      • Andrew

        Sep 9, 2014 at 4:12 pm

It’s actually the opposite of what you say. The reason every single golf professional stresses the importance of getting custom-fitted for beginners is because all OEMs manufacture their retail clubs to similar specifications as the tour players whom they endorse. They all do extensive testing with the players and change the designs, weighting, etc. based on the feedback of their tour players. This, however, does not translate to the perfect club for the consumer. The main differences between the clubs that the tour players and use and the ones on retail are the dispersion and, most importantly, the shaft.

    • steve

      Aug 20, 2014 at 1:44 pm

If Walmart gave them 250 million to play Walmart clubs they would. Do you think Tiger or Rory picked Nike because of the clubs or the money? When Tiger signed with Nike it took years to have a all Nike bag. What is Tiger suppose to say about the clubs? These clubs look horrible from the black insert and the green swoosh.

    • Sammy Moon

      Aug 20, 2014 at 5:27 pm

Wow… a lot of hate. While tiger does play custom blades, they are still the same core iron at heart, they are just heavily modified. Remember that Nike is still one of the youngest golf companies out there and in 10 years or so the company has really come a long ways from their original designs. Remember the slingshot? Not a pretty club and a huge swoosh, but its the only set of irons I ever remember having to create a wait list for to get ordered for customers. Nike has done a great job getting Tiger and Rory on staff and part of the reason they chose Nike is because of the attention they will get from the company. Nike works so hard to improve every year and market a radical new product. Remember that they get much of their design feedback from their pros, which includes Tiger and Rory. So obviously these designs are good enough for them to like as they most likely had input in the design.

  22. Scooter McGavin

    Aug 19, 2014 at 6:32 pm

To all those complaining about the look: maybe these weren’t designed with you traditionalist old geezers in mind. They are probably are trying to get some younger blood that doesn’t mind bolder looking equipment with these designs. So, to put it short, do what others have said and just keep buying your Titleist blades that you probably can’t hit anyway.

    • MHendon

      Aug 19, 2014 at 11:25 pm

Scooter you’re probably right. Nike more than likely is marketing these to a younger crowd. Problem is the majority of the golfing public is over the age of 30. It’s hard to second guess a company who’s renowned for marketing its brand, but I believe they may be missing the mark on this one.

I wonder what Rory and Tiger’s club specs especially after he said that his PW is 45 degrees, which is pretty strong for a Tour player. The stock PW is 47, which from what I saw, the Vapor Pro and Pro Combo specs look to be pretty comparable to other manufacturers. The Vapor Speed remind me of the Old TMag Burner Irons in terms of iron lofts. As for the color, I would prefer sticking with the Red theme but this works. I’ll take this neon green instead of the SQ Yellow

One Question for Nike: How do I remove the puke-green swoosh?

  32. NickM3

    Aug 19, 2014 at 12:22 pm

My suggestion for my Nike would be to offer the ‘Swoosh’ in all colors and finish of the club, such as chrome, black nickel, etc,for individuality. Just like Hopkins golf has done, be able to customize your own set and Nike will kill it with these irons.

I always liked the idea of combo iron sets. I need forgiveness in a 4 iron. But I don’t need any help hitting a 9 iron. I know you can mix n match other club makers but Nike makes it easy. • bradford

      Aug 20, 2014 at 1:11 pm

Mizuno, granted, but as I mentioned above–“Titleist” is much larger on the AP irons than this swoosh. I can’t argue about colors, because to each his own. I prefer more subdued colors on my irons, but that’s not to say it’s a mistake–the more I look at these, the more I like them.

I think these sticks look sweet. I like the change, gives it a modern look. The pro blades will retail for 1200, pro combos 1325, and the vapor speed will go for 990. That is via Nikes twitter feed in one of their comments they posted to someone. The blades will definitely be in the bag for next season , I like the lower ball flight.

Really? Who are they trying to sell clubs too? Do they understand? Does Tiger even appeal to the 12-18 years old any more? Rory yeah, but how can you game these with the stupid colors. So many other choices that dont advertise what clubs you are playing from the other fairway.

    Guys

There are about a million threads on this site about refinishing golf clubs.

Taking the PVD (or whatever it is) off and repainting the swoosh will likely take a few minutes a club.

They will then be absolutely beautiful in the bag as well as from over the ball.

Myself? Despite being a Titty blade ‘purist’ I actually quite like these. Might give my 695MBs a run for their money…I don’t know what it is but I kind of like the sporty look to them.

    Good job Nike.

Not to read too far into anything, but Rory has been sporting some florescent colors lately and red is obviously TW’s… changing of the guard, my friend!

I have an issue with Nike name…idk why, maybe it’s just my superficial side, lol

But have owned their pro combo cb and their forged muscle back irons…they are as good as anything and have phenomenal feel and playability….Their drivers are really good too…..Their top end putters roll the ball better than anything I have used

But I just can’t get myself to buy their stuff….sure lot o people feel same….If you have tried their stuff with neutral mindset very hard not to like it….

Their forged clubs are made at same forging house all other top brands are made so kinda tough to say they suck but titleist or callaway is awesome…..

Why does Nike inist on making ugly clubs. The Tour version had my interest at first sight. Then they come outwith this crap…

No doubt the mmproto version that we have seen pics of look great.

But what I would like to ask is has anyone noticed Nike seem to be doing TW related products in colours similar to his new nutrition supplement sponsor brand colours. His golf bag is black with florescent green/yellow, he has also lately been wearing clothing predominantly black with some florescent green/yellow aspect, shoes the same and now this iron.

Woah that’s fugly, would have gamed the MMProtos over this anytime of the week.

    Aug 19, 2014 at 1:25 am

The MMProtos were sold as just that, a limited run prototype set. I don’t think Nike was looking to create a headache for themselves by releasing a 40 set run of Oven MMProtos at $1,500 a pop then release the identical club a few weeks later at half the cost. As with any product, if you don’t like them, don’t buy them; there’s plenty of choices out there.

It is the same club, awful colors aside.

Glad I didn’t get the protos, I can’t imagine this release will help their value.

Awesome stuff, If you are a low single digit Nike Has great clubs. Since the VRS Forged v1 and v2 and now these they are making some of the best high single digit irons as well.
I hear that they have terrible service if you have warranty issues and its a good idea to throw them through a loft and lie machine, I have seen a few sets that have been off pretty bad in the loft gaps.

    • Chris Jenkins

      Aug 19, 2014 at 11:28 am

all new clubs should be measured for loft and lie, not just nike…ALL of them!!!

I agree, but from what i have heard and seen, Nike irons tend to be out more than most. I have heard that their wedges are accurate within 1.5*. Ping is the best from what i have heard when it comes to that.
The guy who bends my clubs for me suggests getting your clubs re-adjusted EVERY SEASON.

Not sure why people keep saying nike is not in the game anymore. Ummmmm,
Not sure if you been watching rory kick arssssss. Nike clubs. Anyways. This line will go far and as long as they are used and tigers name on them. They will sell.

      Aug 19, 2014 at 10:36 am

If you had watched Rory before the last couple of years, you would have seen him kick arsssss with Titleist clubs.

The fact that he can do it with Nike clubs is a testament to his ability alone and has nothing to do with the clubs.

Nike just doesn’t get it. The MM protos were one of the best looking modern blades ever. Their technology is really starting to take off, but they insist on making their clubs stand out in a bad way. Red club heads with a white nike check on the crown and now what was a great concept or prototype and they put black and yellow on the back. If nike released the MM Protos to retail and released their VR_S Covert tour 2.0 in black, I would actually give them a long, hard look. I simply will not bag clubs that are ugly. The technology is not so far above the rest of the equipment to have to put up with Victory Red and Volt colors. No way these sell to serious golfers. The vapor speed line could potentially get away with these looks, but the other two are aimed at mid to scratch golfers. The current pro combos and blades are so much better looking than these. Release the real MM Protos already!!!!!

nike is finally releasing clubs i would play. these look like players clubs with a splash of game improvement. i’m sure they would mix nicely with the MMprotos

Not a fan on how they look. Having said that, if they perform better than my current Mizuno JPX 800 irons, the look is secondary. Hopefully, these will get Nike noticed again.

I’d like to know more about that “black colored PVD insert” on the back of the face.
Is it a vibration dampening material?
Is it weighted inside with tungsten to add more forgiveness at specific areas?
Is it some sort of combination of both?

    • Chris

      Aug 19, 2014 at 1:27 am

PVD is a corrosion resistant coating. Not sure what they have underneath it.

I’m sure these Vapor irons works great, but Victory Red TW Blades looks so much better.

Nike is climbing to the top of the golf industry actually so while the traditionalist will disapprove, their equipment flat out performs. to each their own…ford/chevy, apple/samsung….the list goes on. I think the wildcard here is that they are a marketing behemoth and the best 2 players on the planet…and winning mind you.

Spotted: Tony Finau’s driver shaft change at the 2024 Texas Children’s Houston Open

Published

on

Tony Finau has always been known as one of the longest players on the PGA Tour, but he has recently been working on adding a little more distance. Last year, Finau averaged 118.3 mph club head speed and 178.08 mph ball speed, all while playing a Mitsubishi Diamana D+ Limited 70 TX driver shaft. This year, he has increased his club head speed to 123.93 mph and his ball speed to 183.32 mph.

However, Finau’s overall distance has decreased by two yards in that time. From a fitting perspective, something was amiss. We asked Tony about the shaft change at the Texas Children’s Hospital Open.

“[I’m seeing] better numbers with the spin. My driver’s been a little high spin for me over the last month or so, and so I just figured it was time to probably check out the equipment,” Finau said. “And it definitely showed me that I was using a shaft that’s maybe a little too tip-stiff for me, the way I load the club now. [I’m seeing] better numbers with the spin.”

Finau switched from the Mitsubishi Diamana D+ Limited 70 TX into the Diamana GT 70 TX. The newer Diamana GT has a slightly different profile than the D+ Limited with the stiffest handle section in the Diamana lineup. The mid sections between the two are similar stiffness but the tip is just slightly stiffer in the Diamana GT. Both shafts are within one gram of each other in the 70 TX. The torque rating on the GT is 0.1 higher than the D+Limited’s 2.7 measurement.

Mitsubishi lists the Diamana GT as a shaft between the mid-launching Diamana TB and the new low-launch Diamana WB shafts. For most players, it would be considered a mid/low launch and low-spin shaft option. Mitsubishi’s Xlink Tech Resin System makes sure the maximum carbon fiber content is there for smooth feel without reducing the strength of the shaft. MR70 carbon fiber is used for reinforcing the shaft and boron is used in the tip for its high strength and compression properties.

Finau is still using his trusty Ping G430 LST driver in 9 degrees and has the adjustable hosel set to -1 degree of loft (standard lie angle). Finau’s long-time favorite Lamkin UTX Green grip is installed. He definitely has a few extra wraps of tape under that grip as you can see the bulge down where the grip meets the shaft.

One final note: Per Ping’s PGA Tour rep Kenton Oates, Finau’s driver is also adjusted to play one degree upright to help dial in his desired launch.

We’ll see how he fares with the new setup this week in Houston!
