Report: D. Johnson suspended for failed drug test

Published

on

Updated: 7:10 p.m. EST

Dustin Johnson failed a drug test, testing positive for cocaine and will serve a six-month suspension from the PGA Tour, according to Golf.com.

The story says that it was the 30-year-old’s third failed drug test: for marijuana in 2009 and for cocaine in 2012 and 2014. It also states that Johnson’s 11-week hiatus from the game, which caused him to miss the 2012 Masters, was the result of a failed drug test.

Hours later, however, the PGA Tour contradicted Golf.com’s story with a statement that Johnson had not been suspended.

“This is to clarify that Mr. Johnson has taken a voluntary leave of absence and is not under a suspension from the PGA Tour,” the statement said.

On Monday, Johnson withdrew from the WGC-Bridgestone invitational citing personal reasons. On Thursday, the eight-time PGA Tour winner released a statement announcing that he would take an indefinite leave of absence from professional golf.

“I will use this time to seek professional help for personal challenges I have faced,” Johnson said. “By committing the time and resources necessary to improve my mental health, physical well-being and emotional foundation, I am confident that I will be better equipped to fulfill my potential and become a consistent champion.”

Johnson is currently ranked No. 16 in the Official World Golf Rankings, No. 4 in FedEx Cup points and was No. 5 in the Ryder Cup points standings. His agent said that he will not participate in the PGA Championship at Valhalla, the year-end FedEx Cup playoffs, or the Ryder Cup later this year.

Both TaylorMade-adidas, Johnson’s equipment and apparel sponsor, as well as the PGA Tour, have issued statements supporting Johnson through his current situation.

“We wish him well and look forward to his return,” TaylorMade said.

I think we need to ignore all the gossip, and focus on the fact a man’s career and live are in danger because of drugs. We should all hope Dustin cleans himself up and reinvigorates his career just like Robert Garrigus did after his battle with drugs and alcohol.

So DJ is taking the ultimate mental booster playing a mental game, but gets 6 months on the hush hush.

Meanwhile they publicly crucify Vijay for .00001% of deer antlers in a spray?

    This reeks of political BS

The PGA Tour is making a huge mistake in my opinion. Playing dumb and acting like it wasn’t involved in this is embarrassing. Players don’t voluntarily quit for 6 months mid season, right before the PGA and Ryder Cup. My guess is they gave DJ an or else ultimatum. Get help on your own or we will have to suspend you formally. I’m not sure of the legalities……but clearly, their drug policy is a joke. Matt Every and his comments are scary. Marijuana and cocaine are illegal Matt. It’s not ok, even if you consider them non performance enhancing. The Tour has some work to do.

I don’t think that recreational drugs should be illegal in the first place, but that is another point. I also think that the IOC mandated testing due to the Olympics is a crap show, but again, that is another point. Apparently, we actually don’t know that he failed a drug test due to the credibility of these “reports”, but one thing seems clear. DJ seems like he does what he wants, when he wants, and that my friends is the real danger. Get well soon buddy. Everybody struggles, and there are sanctimonious arse aches out there that will love to kick you when you are down. They’re the ones with the real problems.

      Broke up will mackenzie’s marriage.
Banged his wife over the course of a year and was caught in a limo at a tour event.
      They divorced immediately.
In January Johnson was linked with Jimmy Walkers wife(mother of 2) at a jupiter fl bar.
They were not hiding their affection…and it ended with them leaving in 1 car.
This would be one of a series of meet ups for the pair according to jupiter residents who are a bit of a gossipy crowd.

Alright, just ignore that weed and blow are illegal drugs (except CO and WA for weed). Don’t you think that even if DJ had a prescription for these drugs that the PGA should just out right suspend him or any player that takes anything for a mental edge? I mean PED’s for pro golfers should include anything that’s mind altering or something that has the potential to “cool” your nerves. This includes tobacco and alcohol too. If you’re a choker or you have the yips then you shouldn’t be able to smoke something or pop a pill to make it go away. It just seems like its going against the spirit of a “gentleman’s game”.

Wah wah, what a cry baby. You’ve got millions. You don’t have to work ever again. You play golf for a living. How can you have any real personal problems? Toughen up boy and start living in the real world. Try working two jobs, having a family, a mortgage, counting the dollars week to week wondering where the next dollar is going. Instead, you shove that crap up your nose and have to take a break from your life on easy street without a worry in the world. It makes me sick you spoiled brat. You live a privileged life and you should appreciate it.

I think golf in general has falsely put itself on this pedestal where the public thinks these guys are super clean. It is the PGA that has covered this type of behavior for decades. I am sure there are many pros who have done exactly what Tiger and Dustin have done in the past but today the chances of being caught are greater. The PGA tour has done a great job of promoting a squeaky clean image.

I don’t think the PGA Tour has any right to test players for non performance enhancing substances. In other sports pain killers are illegally used to dull pain or feeling of pain and no one guest suspended.

Sponsors on the other hand have every right.

Who cares? These are DJ’s issues. I keep hearing ‘but but what about the kids…they look up to him’. Bull pucky! Trust me..as a former D1 collegiate golfer who has been around these guys on and off the course, pros are no role models. Weed, blow, meth…yup it’s all out there on the course. Maybe I’m just jealous that these guys can party all day all night and tee it up the next morning at 7AM and play like they just got 10 hours of sleep. Oh well…let’s clean it up fellas!

All the top players at my club can usually be found by the cart shed after 18 holes, passing around a bowl. Blow, thats a little bit crazy, but weed and blow arent performance enhancing drugs. Gin and whiskey are 😉 i would tell the pga to go suck an egg and invest my money in headshops in colorado and washington

He also broke up the marriage of Will Mackenzie by banging his wife. He had an affair with another pga tour wife but that marriage somehow lasted. DJ is not a good guy. Booze, affairs with married women, weed, coke. This guy is done. Trust me. He won’t come back from this. He may come back to golf but will never be the same player.

      Aug 1, 2014 at 5:15 pm

I agree with that. Johnny Miller has mentioned it before, but I rarely hear others bring up the fact that when you are playing at that level, you have to feel like you deserve to be there. Just like Tiger, once you are publicly embarrassed and start to realize how poorly you have treated people….. it’s hard to get that back. That being said, everyone deserves a chance to turn it all around…. so best of luck to him.

Wrong. Perhaps he could be given a chance the first time, maybe the second time. But the third? Get rid of him I say. Throw the book at him. Blokes like him don’t learn unless there is an example made of someone. It’s that simple.

Suspended for having a good time on his personal time. If it was performance enhancing I would understand. It didn’t ruin his image or the PGA Tour, no one knew about it because it was his personal life. If we subjected everyone on Bay St to a drug test the stock markets would be shut down for years!!! I think stopping someone from earning a living due to their personal decisions, in private, on their own time is a little much. The arm of the PGA Tour should not be this far reaching.

    • west

      Aug 1, 2014 at 4:59 pm

You might want to rethink that stance. Just like working for a company, if your employees are on illegal drugs, it can adversely impact not only your employee(s), but your company. Any respectable company would suspend an employee caught on drugs and should take a zero tolerance stance. Because if you decide to look the other way, it’s as if your advocate its use. The PGA Tour is totally justified in its decision. If they are truly concerned, they should also help DJ get the treatment he needs.

      • jamie

        Aug 1, 2014 at 5:24 pm

PGA tour players are not employees of the non profit PGA tour. They are sub contracters.

        • sharpestknifeinthedrawer

          Aug 1, 2014 at 6:05 pm

Taylor59 – Nice outlook there. First of all DJ is allegedly participating in illegal activities. There are very few companies that are going to look the other way regardless of when the offense is being committed. If I moonlight as a pimp, should my employer look the other way since I do it on my own time? Where do you draw the line for what illegal activity is OK and what activity isn’t?

Second, DJ may not be an actual employee of the PGA but he is certainly a representative. The PGA paints the players as role models and model citizens. Being a coke-head on the side doesn’t exactly fit that mold does it?

jamie – That’s true but a subcontractor isn’t allowed to do whatever they want. They are still held to standards of conduct. Any business, for-profit or non-profit, can require their contracted employees to adhere to standards of conduct.

    • Taylor59

      Aug 2, 2014 at 7:25 pm

Lol you guys are a joke. If he does something away from the public eye who cares. Daily was drunk and was only ever suspended for his actions in public. When the tour hits Colorado can the player blaze one up during the round? It’s not illegal. If it was performance enhancing, sure send him home, but it’s his life, he has protected his brand image because no one knew!!!

Why are athletes held to a higher standard than anyone else? Bankers who deal with your money are out covering their face in drugs but no one says a word! In Toronto or Mayor admited to doing crack and couldn’t keep himself together in public. He got paid to go to rehab, great use of my tax dollars.

DJ did drugs that didn’t affect his image in public and did not enhance his performance.

Finally, If Paulina asked you to do a line off her would you really say no?!! Lol

Is congress now going to come down on golf like they did baseball? 6-months for a third time failure seems extremely lenient. What’s the baseball policy again?

As previous posts yes we all have demons look at (Tiger) ?? I for one am hugely disappointed in DJ, not for his off the field antics more the fact he will not be able to Grace the turf of Gleneagles. I just hope he can realise his God given talents and start to prioritize all that is important. Good luck and in sure we will see you soon.
