Kuchar holes out to win the RBC Heritage

Published

on

Matt Kuchar had chances to win each of his last three events, the Valero Texas Open, Shell Houston Open and the Masters, but fell short each time on Sunday. He got the monkey off his back this week at the RBC Heritage Open, however, holing a bunker shot on his last hole to finish 11-under par, one shot clear of Luke Donald.

Kuchar shot a final-round 64 at Harbour Town Golf Links, and then spent the next hour watching the tournament from the clubhouse to see if Donald would catch him. Donald started the day as the leader, but he found himself in a dog fight as soon as he teed off thanks Kuchar’s hot start. Donald finished with a 2-under 69, and added drama at the finish when he nearly holed his pitch for birdie from right of No. 18’s green to force a playoff.

The 2nd-place finish for Donald was his third runner-up at the RBC Heritage. His well publicized swing changes seemed to take hold this week, however, as he shot four solid rounds of 70-69-66-69.

Kuchar started the day hot and finished the front nine with a 6-under 30. He then birdied No. 10 and almost holed out from the sand on No. 11. It looked as if he was going to run away with the tournament, but he cooled off with a string of pars that culminated in what appeared to be a costly a three-putt from 4 feet on No. 17. Just when it looked like Kooch might let another one slip away, he holed his bunker shot from short of the green on No. 18 for his one-shot victory.

Ben Martin, a Clemson University graduate and South Carolina native, shot a final-round 67 to tie for third place, the most impressive finish of his young career. The 26-year-old also finished third at the PGA Tour’s Puerto Rico Open in March, but he missed his previous three cuts before entering the event.

Another of the PGA Tour’s top young guns, John Huh, tied for third with Martin at 9-under. The 23-year-old shot rounds of 71-68-68-68 to post his best finish since he tied for third at The Wyndham Championship in August.

Scott Brown and Brian Stuard tied for fifth place at 7-under, while Brian Harmon and Jim Furyk finished tied for seventh at 5-under.

Long overdue win for one of the most consistent players on tour.

Just needs a major to really complete his resume.

GolfWRX is on site this week at the Valero Texas Open.

The event has been around since 1922, making it one of the oldest on the PGA Tour calendar. Over the years, it’s been held at a variety of courses across the Lone Star State, but it’s found its home at TPC San Antonio in recent years. Some of the biggest names in golf have taken home the title here, including Arnold Palmer, Ben Hogan, Lee Trevino, and Ben Crenshaw.

GolfWRX has its usual assortment of general galleries, WITBs and special pull-out albums. As always, we’ll continue to update the links below as more photos come in from TPC San Antonio.
