Are you wondering how to feel about that headline? LOL. I couldn’t resist, but, without the shades of slang meaning, it’s heroically true. Especially after today’s news: that Tiger is done for the rest of the 2008 season. Stress fractures and a torn ligament demand a season-ending surgery.
During the U.S. Open, though Tiger’s knee shot warning signals through him most of the week, it couldn’t penetrate the spirit and will of the #1 golfer on grass.
And Rocco — his precision of game and infectious outlook exhibited him as a hero all on his own. Rocco emerged from the battle not as the loser, but as a giant in golf lore.
Although Tiger’s wound brought him to his knees, he did not surrender. In fact, it seemed as though Tiger in part was helped along by Rocco’s joyous embrace of the day and his sparkly-eyed zeal for the intense competition that brought out the best in his game. But make no mistake: Tiger knows where his own bootstraps are.
This was a stop-the-world tournament. No one broke away, but some fell away. One missed shot became obscurity for many would-be champions. It was also a perpetual head-game. Phil seemed to lose that game on 13. Tiger tamed the head-game over his play, his challengers, and an unfamiliar enemy, his body.
This could very well be the beginning of the new golden age of golf, where age isn’t as relevant and where nationality is not a differentiator. This dawning age is identified by player after player growing taller and reaching higher for a bar we thought unreachable – but now it’s being grasped by the first in what I believe to be a new wave.
These players will come from anywhere, any era, at anytime, a different player each time Tiger plays. These players are out there now, preparing, reaching, grinding. And they are beginning to see results and glimmers of hope that it might just be them who will peak next week.
Tiger, I believe, feels them closing in, and he smiles. So should we.
Tiger smiles and so should we??? Nope. We should be jumping with joy and celebrating like never before. We need someone to come through the ranks and give someone like Tiger Woods a run for his money. We are tired of people just melting away in front of Tiger. Just the knowledge of Tiger in the field ensures that half of these guys set their mind to finishing second. That is (hopefully was) just not good for the game. Will the likes of Anthony Kim, Sean O’Hair be able to take heart from this victory and set out in pursuit of the Tiger like never before? One sincerely hopes that is the case because almost everyone is tired of total Tiger domination. No one minds seeing Tiger win after having to guts it out for five days. Like he himself points out, it is victories like the one in Torrey Pines that gives him the most satisfaction.
One thing though, still don’t understand the reasoning behind the headline for this article!! Surely it was anything but lame!

LAME: 1. crippled or physically disabled, esp. in the foot or leg so as to limp or walk with difficulty.
2. impaired or disabled through defect or injury: a lame arm.
Obviously, my headline is accurate in a physical sense. I’m not disparaging Tiger’s victory in the least, but I was trying to garner attention by being painfully specific.
Tiger smiles because he likes the challenge of people rising up to take him on, and we should like it, as well, because it is great theatre. I think more and more of this will happen, and we are currently looking ahead at a new golden age for golf because of this. Player-by-player, the field is closing in, inspired by Tiger, and this past weekend, on a lame leg, he almost didn’t escape.

I think what Tiger did was historic in the sense that he is getting closer to the “unreachable/unattainable” record in golf. 18 professional majors.Everyone else is in a completely different league than Tiger.Tiger does,in fact, dominate and the only way you are gonna beat him is to out work and out practice him and I dont see that happening from anyone.Rock onward Tiger!
