Tiger Takes Dubai Desert Classic

A final round 65 from Tiger Woods saw him win the Dubai Desert Classic by one shot from Martin Kaymer.

Woods started the round 3 shots behind the leaders but the signs were ominous as he struck his approach shot on the first hole to two feet for the birdie and followed this up with another birdie at the third that saw the lead wittled down to one shot before the leader had even teed off. Woods birdied 6 of the last 9 holes to record the best back nine score of the tornament of 31 and put pressure on those behind him. Included in that run of birdies were a chip in at 12th and a superb putt at 18th where a 20ft downhill putt across subtle undulations was made to look like a tap in  when the ball dived into the centre of the cup.

The last pairing of Henrik Stenson and Ernie Els both played inconsistant golf with Stenson repeatedly missing the greens and Els not getting the rub of the green as several putts only just failed to go in. Els immediately  atoned for bogeys at 11 and 12 with birdies at 13 and 14 but hit into thick rough at the drivable 16th where he could only manage a par. Needing a birdie at the last to tie, Els tried to reach the par 5 in two but suffered the same fate that befell Tiger Woods 24 hours earlier as he saw his second shot hold up in the wind and drop into the water. Els then failed to get up and down from the drop zone to conceed second place to Kaymer.

Earlier, South African Loius Oosthuizen had set the club house target with a fantastic 65 which included 2 missed putts of around 4 feet and a bogey at the last to reach 12 under but Woods was irresistable and his final round charge brought him home to record a total of  -14 for his second Dubai Desert Classic.
