Cobra unveils Masters-inspired Bio Cell Driver

Published

on

Cobra’s Bio Cell driver is already available in six different colors, but for a limited time it will be available in seven.

Just like last year, the company has added Masters-themed aesthetics to its latest driver. For 2014 that’s the Bio Cell, Cobra’s all-titanium driver played on the PGA Tour by Rickie Fowler.

Aside from the cosmetic changes — the crown is a familiar Augusta green and the accents are yellow and gold — the Masters-inspired driver also comes stock with a similarly colored Aldila ATX Tour Green 65 shaft in R, S and X flexes (for lefties, R and S flexes only). It has a green Lamkin ACE 3Gen grip, a Masters-themed adjustable wrench and each of the 2014 limited-edition heads is laser etched from 0001 to 2014.

“There is so much buzz in the golf community surrounding the first major of the year, and the limited-edition driver helps bring some of that excitement to the Cobra brand,” said Tom Olsavsky, vice president of R&D in a press release. “This driver showcases our game-changing technologies, including MyFly8, SmartPad and E9 Face, that delivers increased distance, while the limited-edition Green allows us to celebrate one of golf’s premier events.”

MyFly8 is Cobra’s latest adjustable hosel system, which allows golfers to adjust the loft of the Bio Cell driver to 9, 9.5, 10.5, 11 and 12 degrees while maintaining a relatively square face angle. Three more adjustable options exist — draw settings of 9.5D, 10.5D and 12D — that make the driver more upright and maintain a relatively square face angle.

The driver ($399) will be available in select golf shops worldwide starting March 15, twenty-five days before Round 1 of the 2014 Masters.

Would be a very cool driver for a collection. I would be scared to game it though.

Spotted: Nate Lashley’s Ping PLD “Wolverine” putter

Published

on

Ping PLD putters have been a very common site on profesional tours. Pros seem to gravitate toward the PLD line’s custom options and precision milling. We have seen the PLD line expanded over the years, but we haven’t seen too many, if any, large mallets.

This week we spotted a PLD putter in Nate Lashley’s bag that has a similar look to the old Ping Wolverine head shape. This putter is a large mallet with the famous “claws” on the outside and oval center that housed the alignment aid.

Nick’s putter has the PLD logo on the back but also looks like it might have an insert installed on the face. It is hard to tell but at the address picture, it looks like the face is a lighter material than the rest of the putters. The putter is center-shafted and should be face-balanced with a high MOI for stability and forgiveness on mishits. The sole is completely milled and has no markings of name or technologies that might be present in the head. A single white site line is on the top of the putter for alignment.

Nick’s putter is finished off with a chrome steel shaft and a Super Stroke Zenergy Flatso 2.0 grip in black and white.
