Preview: ISPS HANDA World Cup of Golf
Last week’s Australian Masters winner Adam Scott is teeing it up for the third week in around in his home country, this time at the ISPS HANDA World Cup of Golf again at Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Melbourne, Victoria. The 60 man field will attempt to best a 6,397-yard Composite Course in what is, essentially, an individual stroke play event, even though a winning team will be crowned.
Confused? It seems that teams exist, but that only about 10 percent of the purse is reserved for the team competition element. The rest of the $8 million purse goes to the outright winner of the stroke play event.
You can catch the World Cup on Golf Channel:
- Wed: 9 p.m. ET – 2 a.m ET
- Thurs: 9 p.m. ET– 2 a.m ET
- Fri: 8 p.m. ET-1 a.m. ET
- Sat: 8 p.m. ET-1 a.m. ET
At the event in 2011, Gary Woodland and Matt Kuchar were victorious, securing the 24th victory for the United States in the competition, which is tops for any country.
Overall, the field is about as good as could be expected with Adam Scott, Jason Day, Graeme McDowell, Frencesco Molinari, Jonas Blixt, and Ryo Ishikawa all teeing it up. China’s Liang Wen-chong, who just won the Resorts World Manila Masters on the Asian Tour is in the field also.
Overall, players from 34 different countries will be competing, including 13 of the top 50 golfers in the world.
The World Cup has been played since 1953 and has traditionally seen two-man teams from 28 countries compete. The likes of Snead, Hogan, Nicklaus, Palmer, Trevino, Thomson, Faldo, Ballesteros, Langer, Woods have all won/been part of the winning team in the competition.
Of course this year there is an added layer of intrigue as golf is set to return to the Olympics in 2016 and the field this week is comprised in very much the same way as the Olympic fields will be determined in three years time. Although there are no plans for team competition in Rio in 2016, the selection for–and many of the players present at–this week’s even will be teeing it up for country in that event too.
