Just three weeks ago, TaylorMade announced its SLDR fairway woods and hybrids. Today, golfers are getting their first look at TaylorMade’s newest line of metalwoods, JetSpeed, which includes a new driver, fairway woods and hybrids.

Before you attempt to throw your February-released (and now two-models old) TaylorMade RBZ Stage 2 and RBZ Stage 2 Tour drivers, fairway woods and hybrids through the windows of TaylorMade’s headquarters, take note that the JetSpeed metalwoods are almost certainly a complement to the SLDR line, and not a replacement.

Taylormade jet speed

Picture above: The JetSpeed driver’s matte-painted crown

The JetSpeed driver, fairway woods and hybrids have shallow, or short, faces when measured from sole to crown. And only the JetSpeed driver has any adjustability, a 3-degree adjustable hosel.

Those are clues that the JetSpeed metalwoods are a direct replacement for TaylorMade’s higher-spinning RBZ Stage 2 (non-tour) drivers, fairway woods and hybrids, while the more adjustable, deeper-faced SLDR driver, fairway woods and hybrids are a replacement the company’s lower-spinning RBZ Stage 2 Tour line.

Like the SLDR fairway woods and hybrids, JetSpeed models have the company’s new Speed Pocket, a handle-bar shaped slot that cuts all the way through the soles of the clubs.

9a2fbd5813afaa2e9472eaefa28d1857

According to Mike Ferris, vice president of product marketing for TaylorMade, the new Speed Pocket makes the SLDR fairway woods lower spinning and higher launching than the RBZ Stage 2 Tour fairway woods, and it’s safe to say that golfers will likely see the same from JetSpeed, as higher-launching, lower-spinning metalwood shots are the key to helping most golfers unlock more distance.

Photo above: The face of a JetSpeed 15-degree 3 wood, which is shallower TaylorMade’s SLDR 15-degree SLDR fairway woods.

The JetSpeed driver also has a slot in its sole, marking the first time TaylorMade has used a true-to-form Speed Pocket in one of its drivers. While the sliding weight mechanism TaylorMade used in its SLDR driver has some of the beneficial properties associated with a Speed Pocket, the slot does not go all the way through the sole as it appears to on the JetSpeed driver.

So what’s with the name JetSpeed?

TaylorMade’s 2012 line of “RocketBallz” drivers, fairway woods and hybrids was said to be inspired by the reaction of some of the company’s tour players, who allegedly said the ball came off the face of the clubs “like a rocket.” TaylorMade named the thinner, stronger material it used to create its 2013 RBZ Stage 2 fairway woods “Rocket Steel.” Rocket Steel, used in the aerospace industry in rocket engines and jet landing gears, was 38 percent stronger than the 455 carpenter steel steel alloy the company used to make the faces of its original RocketBallz fairway woods. Might I be jumping to conclusions to say that the alloy used to make the JetSpeed metalwoods might also be from the aerospace industry, maybe a lighter, stronger “Jet Steel” perhaps?

TaylorMade JetSpeed Hybrids

taylormade 2014

Like the JetSpeed fairway woods, the JetSpeed hybrids aren’t adjustable.

The JetSpeed driver, fairway woods and hybrids will be available Dec. 13. The driver comes stock with a 46-inch Matrix Velox T 49 shaft in lofts of 9.5, 10.5 and 13 degrees and sells for $299. It is also available in a TP model with beefier Matrix Velox T 60 shaft for $399.

The fairway woods are available in lofts of 15, 17, 19, 21 and 23 degrees with Matrix’s Velox T 69 shaft and will sell for $229. The hybrids ($199) are available in lofts of 19, 22, 25 and 28 degrees. The weight of the stock shaft, a Matrix Velox T, varies by weight. Regular-flex shafts are 65 grams and stiff-flex shafts are 75 grams.

Don’t you all think it’s about time we just stopped buying all this new gear. I am as guilty as the next person as I have been sold new drivers that were not much better than the older ones.we should all be hitting about 300 yards by now.if we all stopped buying new the so called new gear then maybe the golf companies would only bring out a new club when it was really better than previous models.somehow I dought it.

I’m not going to pass judgment an the quality of the Jetspeed because I haven’t hit it yet. How could I have? It has only been on the market about 10 days.

But I can tell you that based on what I am already seeing in on-line sales, it’s either a dud, or those in the know fear getting stuck with overstock because the dumping has already started.

Over the weekend several big, reputable Ebay retailers fire-saled dozens of new Jetspeed drivers and fairway woods with no reserve auctions. Brand new drivers sold for $150-$200, 3 woods for $85-$115 on average.

Great to see another innovation from TMAG. When the new stuff comes out, the old stuff goes down in price. Bought my R1 right after the SLDR came out and now am playing the best driver I’ve ever owned. All this new stuff makes buying golf clubs less expensive. It also forces the competition to keep up and prices for previous models come down. Also, even with all the new stuff, some of the TMAG stuff is still the best.

I was at roger dunn today and there are barrels and barrels of last years new drivers and fairway woods, all marked down….so we need even more clubs that nobody will ever buy? the markup must be tremendous if they can afford to just change every 3 months and make the old ones obsolete. the only people that benefit is kids getting new stuff for half price.

I have a Rbz 3 wood and no-one can deny it’s hot and forgiving. This driver is suppose to be the driver that Rbz should’ve been. I was a mizuno iron player for years but their forged irons always look the same do the same different mdl#. (Point) every company is guilty but give buyers a break the metal isn’t gold ” Scotty Cameron”. At least Cobra and Adams give buyers a price break.

I’ve bought every new TM driver since 2001 and it’s simply incredible. I’m now hitting the ball 500+ yards a crack and had to buy a new wedge so I can chip back to the greens I have over-driven! Distance claims are BS or at least no more valid than government statistics that get churned out to get attention. Bottom line is if you stink, you still can’t buy a game. I went to an out of town wedding a few weeks back a borrowed a set of clubs for a quick round with the boys. Standard off the rack gear probably 10 years old and I still broke 80 and kicked everyone’s butt even with their Optiforce-SLDR-Forged Composite-Speed Pocket-Nitrogen filled pieces of junk! For some really fun…..find youself a set of hickory shaft clubs and go walk a quick 9-holes at your local muni. It was tons of fun and required lots of imagination and different types of shots. Glad I don’t have to do that every round but makes you appreciate the Karsten Solheim’s and Dr. Hocknel’s of the world.

This is why I hope taylormade crashes and burns. To me this is just another sldr without the cheap “light switch” on the bottom. Coming out with a new line every few months is a sure fire sign that they don’t do a lot of developing and improving from line to line. STUPID

      Nov 18, 2013 at 1:15 pm

Agreed! I was a Taylormade fan in early 2000’s, especially the TP line, but will no longer play their product. My local golf shop has 6 used SLDR’s in stock and a total of 17 drivers (all brands). Tells you something about the product, but disappointing to see so many SLDR’s sold in the first place.

Ditto! This constant barrage of TM drivers makes me feel like what I buy today is good for approximately three months then the propaganda comes why my current TM equipment is obsolete. The releases have no impact anymore. I realize Callaway has vowed to do the same…every six months. Good grief!

Not worried about resale at all or selling my V-Steel just yet. But to purchase at premium price now is ridiculous when you can wait another 3 months and the price take a dip plunge down by 30% maybe. I rather wait.

    • markb

      Nov 14, 2013 at 12:43 pm

Good point. Besides, does anyone really buy new clubs with resale value in mind? If so, then the only clubs they should ever buy are Ping Eye2 copper irons or maybe an old Hogan Apex.

Mark – There is a difference between depreciation and making a bonehead purchase. Buying Taylor Made woods at full retail would be categorized as a bonehead purchase.

        • markb

          Nov 16, 2013 at 3:34 am

You’re right about full retail purchases, but who even does that anymore? In 2013 I bought an R1, G25, SLDR, Covert Tour, RBZ2, 913d2, and two Optiforces all on Ebay and averaged about $150 for each of them. After extensive on course tweaking and testing with each one, I sold off the losers on Ebay again and generally made a few bucks with each transaction. Cost me virtually nothing to find the driver that fit me best. I used no simulators and never came close to paying retail. Surely I’m not the only one doing this.

          • manlong

            Nov 19, 2013 at 8:42 pm

For an experienced golfer such as Mark. That would be the best way to get the right clubs for your swing thru ebay. And at the same time make some dough. But how bout newbies with no direction or idea on what to do? Those are the guys I would take pity being slaughtered at the cash register. “Ahhh this are the latest…blah…blah…blah” kacinggggggggg!!!!

          • Adam

            Nov 20, 2013 at 10:47 am

Hey Mark – You’re right… buying clubs as you have is the right way to avoid losing money while finding the right club. But you did have resale in mind when you bought them because you knew that some of them would be sold quickly and you didn’t want to lose money on them. The unfortunate thing about what we are led to do by Taylor Made is that you never know who did what to the club you bought online before you bought it slightly used, and in rare cases you could end up with a counterfeit. Secondly, there are so many good pro shops or other small retailers that help you throughout the year that aren’t getting your support because companies like Taylor Made are saturating the business with product that’s losing value fast…. they can’t keep up with the product cycles and are struggling to stay open and exist for all of us. I guess buying clubs from places like Dick’s Sporting Goods (who love the fast product cycles) and ebay instead of the small golf shops is the growing trend.

          • markb

            Nov 25, 2013 at 2:52 am

Adam’s comments are appreciated. I didn’t care at all about resale as I searched for the best driver. Nor did care about marketing hype. All I cared about was performance. (Note that I did not end up with a TMag driver either, in fact I didn’t think much of the SLDR or the R1.) However, I will admit that if I had bought an R1 new and I still had it, I would have lost about $30O in one year! Yes, I know that I’m not supporting my local pro’s by not buying clubs from them at full MSRP. So instead I take lessons from them and pay in cash. Which type of subsidy do you think they prefer?

          • markb

            Nov 25, 2013 at 3:06 am

With regards to counterfeit clubs on Ebay, IMO they are not very common and the accelerated release schedule of the big manufacturers actually serves to help thwart them as they have less time to catch up to their ever-moving driver targets. It’s much easier to buy a Cameron Newport fake than a 4 month old SLDR. What is much more common is buying a used driver with a sprung face. I lost $90 on a green RBZ tour that way. Oh well, that’s life. This is same risk/reward choice you make when buying a used car instead of new. Personally, I’ll let some other guy drive the new Beemer off the lot and lose 5 grand in depreciation.

            Dec 16, 2013 at 4:13 pm

I ended up with an Optiforce 460 — a club for which I had NO HOPES prior to testing. I merely stuck it in the rotation in an effort to touch all bases. Right now I’m eyeballing the next season of trying the Big Bertha and Jetspeed etc. and I see a worrisome trend. Jetspeeds have been on the market for 2 weeks and ALREADY new ones are flooding Ebay at 50% off retail! I just missed an auction for a 9.5 driver that closed at $150 and 3 wood at $85! It’s not even Christmas people. This Jetspeed must either be a dud or retailers fear overstock.

  21. RG

    Nov 13, 2013 at 11:29 pm

Wow, so is that like 3 new models since febuary? So all your other offerings are so deficient you needed to adjust? Wait adjustment is built in… I’m confused and cannot keep up.

  22. tom

    Nov 13, 2013 at 8:39 pm

I’m not a TM fan (except for their putters), and don’t like the looks of these (thought they were womens clubs at first glance), but who cares if they release a ton of products? If you don’t like it then don’t buy it. And if you are on this site you know enough to not pay full retail price for TM clubs if you are worried about resale value.

  23. manlong

    Nov 13, 2013 at 7:51 pm

Maybe, I think the main point is, it would be a huge depreciation for guys who just bought the previous models at least 50% in less than 6 months. That includes myself. So my thoughts now, not to buy any TMAG products that came out, wait for 6 to 12 months and if it’s a great product, buy it once the next model came out by the name “SUPERJETSPEEDTOUR” or somethin’….

  24. markb

    Nov 13, 2013 at 5:23 pm

Is it just me or does anyone else think that Jetspeed is a reaction to Callaway’s Optiforce. They even look similar and the marketing pitch seems similar.

Shoe seems to be on the other foot with regard to catch-up this time. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing. I just switched from an RBZ 2 Tour to the Optiforce because the new Cally had it beat (as well as beating the R1 and SLDR), but now I’ll at least have to try the JetSpeed to see if it beats back.

Sorry Nick, but I don’t sell internationally and most US Ebayers won’t either. You might have a hard time scoring the kind of deals I’m talking about.

BTW, I just picked up a 10.5 Jetspeed for $144 brand new. I haven’t hit it yet, but my first impression is one of disbelief at how big the head is. It’s huge! Easily the biggest driver head I’ve ever seen. Much bigger than the SLDR. Scary, balloon-like big.

  26. Nick

    Nov 13, 2013 at 11:03 am

All I can say is that TM has done it again. I hit the JetSpeed 3-wood and 3-rescue yesterday. And they were great!

From an appearance standpoint, both the fairway and rescue heads are a major upgrade over RocketBallz. The matte black finish is sweet. The contrasting face and subtle crown graphics frame the ball nicely.

Both heads sounded great and felt very solid. The ball seemed jumped off the face despite the cold weather in Ohio. And there was a noticeable difference in launch and trajectory compared to RocketBallz. It is clear that TM was aiming for a much higher launching and much more playable club for the average golfer.

Its still just hollow metal with a shaft stuck in.

I’m pretty sure that the off-the-rack driver is at around 99% of all possibility. Am I really going to replace my current driver anytime soon? My guess is that they are gettin’ while the gettin’ is good because any moment now even the lowest common denominator is going to figure out that these clubs aren’t improving their game. Drivers are maxed out… until the flubber face ones come out in 2030.

I would tend to agree with you if they put out bad products. Say what you want about TM and their release schedules but they continue to put products into the market that outperform the competition. There are way too many uppity wanna-be “purists” out there. Why should they only release one product a year? The truth is, the more products released, the better for the average golfer. Prices on the older equipment go down for those who can’t afford the new stuff. More options is never a bad thing for the consumer.

So does this mean “white” is dead in the TMag line? As much as people hated the white paint on the crowns, this was becoming a distinction of their metal woods. You knew that a guy holding a white club on the tee box was playing a TMag club. (I know the ZL encore was white as well, but honestly how many did you see in person at your local course)

From the bottom of the bottom plate to the inside. If the slot wasn’t filled with a soft polymer to keep out dirt and grass you’d be able to see inside the club head with a flashlight.

Could this just be a 4th quarter revenue grab? An article recently said they’re on pace to reach $2 billion by ’15. They would normally be replacing the Stage 2 line in early ’14 anyway, this just pushes that release forward by a couple of months. But this way they’ll capture some late-season spending which will count toward their 2013 sales numbers. That said, the line looks pretty good even though I lean toward the SLDR options…

Any word on the COR for these clubs? They are conforming, right?

The only part that piques my curiousity is that new allow being used, where it says it is so much stronger and lighter than Carpenter Steel 455, which so many have used with great results.
Considering that the maximum COR or CT is being reached even in fairways and such, I wonder if this new alloy actually would have any benefits other than as a marketing ploy.

I had a Cleveland Launcher driver forever and recently broke down and bought the Classic XL Custom. Didn’t need to since I was hitting about even with all the new drivers coming out, I just felt like a change. Beautiful club, adjustable, great sounding, long and forgiving. When Cleveland comes out with it’s new lineup for 2014, I’ll still be playing that club. Don’t stress about all the these new clubs coming out one after another since, Distance is maxed, COR is maxed and MOI is maxed, the only difference is the looks, colors and gadgets/adjustments. My point is buy what you like, get fitted and enjoy. Proper fitting is what eveyone needs not, the latest and greatest.

If you take 2013 as a whole TM would have had the following Drivers at retail. RBZ (Stock left from 2012), RBZ Stage 2 R1, R1 TP, R1 Limited (Black) TM 3.0 SMU Dicks exclusive, SLDR, SLDR TP, Jetspeed (December Launch) So in total there would have been 6 different drivers and and 9 in total if you take TP and limited versions into account.

So, your comment of “Many companies launch 2 different types of drivers for different types of players” makes no sense. Compliment means to ADD…thus a player would ADD this to HIS/HER…NOT, a driver for one type of and a driver for another type. What i will PAT on the back is my 8th grade english teacher for her wisdom in understanding the written word. As for a 10:37PM harsh reply by you? Once t-mag starts to design these clubs with durability in mind, I may buy one. 4 t mags with caved in faces in 2 years and only one 910 d3 with zero damage to the face after 2 1/2 seasons. need I say more? Has anyone else had problems with taylormade clubs breaking?

    • markb

      Nov 11, 2013 at 8:39 pm

Yup, I caved a face of an RBZ Stage 1, and I had a toe plate of an SLDR fall out.

    • Devin

      Nov 11, 2013 at 10:27 pm

I broke two RBZ stage 1 drivers. I have the pics to show it. The thing is that really bugs me is TMAG told me they couldn’t do anything about it because it was UPS most likely that broke it during shipping. I only hit 3 balls with it… right on the sweet spot and the crown split right through the R logo on the top. I love TMAG, but the glue hasn’t even dried yet on my SLDR tip and now this??? The funny thing is I’m sure this is going to “compliment” the SLDR at the 299$ price point. Now TMAG has all the bases covered… Stage 2 and R1 around 199$, RBZ stage 1 around 150$, Jet speed at 299$ and SLDR at 399$. Plus if you are a big spender you can get the TP SLDR and drop 499$. I think 299$ worth of lessons would pay greater dividends than the jet speed

I know the marketing is a bit over the top, but I don’t understand all of the outrage. This frequent release strategy is only a positive for the informed consumer. Either you believe a) that the new products are BS, in which case then this strategy continuously reduces price on prior versions making them more affordable, or b) that the new launches are much better, in which case this strategy delivers continuous improvement to consumers rather than waiting for longer (and potentially arbitrary) release cycles. If you do your homework (and it is very easy to get on a launch monitor these days and test), it’s really only upside. Only if you have to buy every new TM product will you have to shell out a lot of cash, but that is a choice not an obligation. For what it’s worth the only TM club I use in an R7, but if the right thing comes along I would buy the new one.

Best comment ive seen yet on this site. Thanks for not jumping on the negative band wagon. Taylormade makes really good stuff. My rbz 3 wood still produces more ballspeed than my 913 fd. If you dont like the look of a club like the new callaway x hot2 being pumpkin orange you are stuck with your club for another two years hoping for callaway to build the next line more to your liking. I say let taylormade release as many models as possible as long as its done with quality. Their older models like the rbz with a great shaft will perform as well as any other oem current club. I just picked up a new R1 for $199 and i got better numbers than my 913 D2. But at that price i was able to get fit and put in a custom shaft and create a monster that totaled $100 less than a new titleist. More releases mean more options and better prices.

At Some point I would think coming out with product so often would deter sales. Personally I’m less likely to buy a TM because if I don’t like it I’ll have to sell it at a 50% discount because something new is already out. And if I do buy a TM wood I will definitely wait knowing full well I can buy it for 25% less in 2 months

    • markb

      Nov 11, 2013 at 8:33 pm

I believe that the accelerated product release schedule allows you to buy, test, and flip clubs faster and cheaper than you would otherwise be able to do. In the past year I bought and flipped an: R1, SLDR, RBZ 2, RAZR Xtreme, 913d2, Optiforce 440, G25 and Nike Covert Tour. Because they depreciate so quickly, I didn’t come close to paying MSRP for any of them and the only one I lost money on was the NIKE. (Could barely give it away less than 6 months after release.) So thanks to Detroit-style planned obsolescence, I get to do extensive testing for cheap bucks, selling off the losers for small profits as I go.

      • KK

        Nov 13, 2013 at 9:49 pm

Did you really buy all of those drivers in one year and find that none of them worked for you? I hope you were doing it just to make a little money on the side, but from your post it sounds like you are looking for a miracle. Why don’t you get on a launch monitor, get fit, and get one driver to game?? Computers numbers don’t lie despite so many people believing that there is some magic combination out there that will give them 50 more yards. Have you tried the Bob Burns “no bananas” driver….that might work for you.

        • JP

          Nov 14, 2013 at 10:40 pm

Too funny KK. Take a lesson markb.

        • markb

          Dec 31, 2013 at 12:33 am

You’ve missed the point KK. Over the past year I found 3 that worked pretty well and 7 more were non-contending rejects. The first keeper was the RBZ Stage 1, then the Stage 2 beat it, and finally the Optiforce 460 beat the Stage 2. I currently own only 1 driver, with a Jetspeed on the way for testing. If it wins, I keep it and sell the Cally. If not, I sell it.

Yes, I do test on monitors whenever I can con a local pro into giving me time. But when they find out that I’m not going to pay full retail buying from them, their interest in indulging my research with Flightscope time disappears, even at $50 an hour. If you want to pay full retail be my guest, but my method is cheaper.

Of course, no amount of simulator time can substitute for on course, in-depth testing with real wind and true roll-out and my preferred shaft. That’s why I prefer to buy them and really test them

I would like to add something here that all you choppers have failed to consider. Does anyone realize that folks bought Woods 3 yrs ago and they are ready for an upgrade??

Just like apple and every other genous company that gives a consumer the ability to always be ahead when it is their time for new product. I don’t think anything is wrong with the speed (pun intended) of product release. If you don’t like it then keep your R7,R9, R11, R1 or what ever it is you have. When it is your turn for a new driver you will have Mach speed!! All they are doing is giving the consumer a chance to have the latest and greatest. If you don’t like it don’t buy it!

Look at the numbers choppers, they are winning and winning big! No one else is close and their product backs it up! Most recently a Fed Ex cup championship and a WGC. You all should be so thankful they give us technology on a rapid pace. If you don’t like the other companies product that yr you have to wait even longer till the next version comes out. That sucks!

    • Pancho Golfer

      Nov 11, 2013 at 6:42 pm

This not accurate. They have the higher winning numbers because they PAY more players. Technology on a rapid pace? No way. technology is a subjective term. Where as APPLE makes a technology product, doesn’t relate to TM making a technology product. he tech is in the fitting and the ability to practice with feedback. Mach Speed only relates to the ability to travel 700+ mile per house. So, to use the word MACH in regards to a golf club is just marketing hype to attract attention. Understand, I am a TM fan: I use a R7 Quad with a RIP shaft at 44″. My trackman numbers are better than anything 2011 or newer. Today marketing is about rising above the noise…with ten companies spending 1 billion a year in advertising the NOISE must be louder. As with every other TM product, I cant wait to see it, hit it, and walk away FOR NOW.

    • Cyberdrox

      Nov 12, 2013 at 2:41 am

Yes. I am still hitting my R7 Superquad TP driver and keep my R1-Mitsubishi Rayon at home most of the time.

The Jetspeed looks more of the R9 Supertri with Speedpocket. I think TM will finally comes up next with an R7 Superquad MWT with speedpocket to compliment their Jetspeed.

Taylormade’s RocketJetSpeedIER^2 is coming out just in time for Christmas. It will be a square headed driver and will put absolutely no side spin on the ball. This is a concept many manufacturers have attempted but none have perfected the technology like TM. They have only been working on it since this morning too! AMAZING! It will also feature a mirror paint job on the crown. The reason behind it is so you can give the sky a quick check for low flying airplanes before continuing with your swing. Also, this driver is rumored to have some of “the Hammer’s” technology integrated into their velocity slot so be prepared to hit it over mountains! The club will be 47″ long (the maximum length allowed). Additionally, they have released a warning that you may have to wait for every green to clear. You heard it here first folks!

      Nov 11, 2013 at 10:33 pm

There numbers were down because 2012 was the year of RBZ. They blew their sales numbers away. I have a friend who is a TM rep and he reached his annual goal by April….in Ohio!! They continue to crank out product because the are able to force to retailers. They advertise the crap out of it so retailers have to carry it. It will only stop when the retailers don’t bring it in and that isn’t happening any time soon.

      • Pancho Golfer

        Nov 12, 2013 at 3:30 pm

Excellent point! Look at the Orlimar Tri-Metal: at the time they marketed this product with aggressive tactics. The retailers made very little but it brought people into their doors. Golf companies are doing to production thru distribution like the GM’s and Ford’s of the past ( if not present) have done. Launch a new model every year, that has some physical change from the prior year. TM created inverted cone technology. Kind of like a Chevy small block V8…one of the greatest engines ever designed. For years, Chevy wrapped a new slick package around this engine. What TM has done for the inside of the head, they are now creating for the outside of the head. If you are TM player, play the club that got you where you are now. TM is trying to get NEW customers loyal to their brand. If the other brands are waiting 2 plus years, then TM is doing a great job of building brand awareness for that person who is in the market. TM et al pays HUGE amounts of dollars to tour players that are basically now on TV 24/7. NEVER in the history of advertising has there been such a device: advertise golf products to people that play golf. Meaning you dont see a burger king ad on the golf channel. So, TM hands a new driver and a check to a Dustin Johnson type player and he goes out and wins….a driver doesnt win you golf tournaments ( but you can lose one, thats for sure). The driving key is to continue to get the consumer to buy NEW equipment so that the stock holders are happy.

Just like I tried the R1, RBZ 2, SLDR, G25, 913d2, AmpCell and everything else released last year — I mean a few months ago. Marketing shmarketing, if it works I’ll keep it in the bag. And I’m not really a TMAG fan, I hit an Optiforce driver now simply because it beat everything else I tried this year. But I do hit the RBZ2 fwoods and the Rocketbladez irons. You can’t convince me that this speedpocket thingy doesn’t work, I’ve seen with my own eyes. I hit my TMAG clubs that sport it high and soft and about 15 yards further across the board. If it works, I’m all in. I’m not, I dump ’em on Ebay with no emotional context attached.

    • Jeff

      Nov 12, 2013 at 1:36 am

Amen. Try everything pick what looks good and works best. If it isn’t an improvement worth the cost than don’t buy it and don’t complain about it. All these complainers make me think they are either to poor to buy a new driver or to lazy to test new clubs. More choices is better I don’t understand why most golfers on this site complain about to many releases as if they would prefer to slow progress down and all play with the same persimmon head and shaft. I love testing clubs it’s fun to see what works and doesn’t plus with all these releases I’m practicing more than ever. By the way the speed pocket in the rbladez does work as I thoroughly tested them prior to purchase against every iron available and have seen thin shots hit greens that would have come up well short with my previous I20s.

      • markb

I’m not for all these additions, replacements, etc., but bottom line in TMAG’s eyes is that as long as people are buying the products, they are going to keep building and bringing out new products. Once that dies down, they will go back to the normal 1-2 year replacement cycle schedule, like Titleist and many others do.

The need to start a leasing program – Terms: 3 months, 6 months or 1 year.
End of the term return for upgrade to current model.

They have impacted the product cycle time….maybe they can help on “Pace of Play”.
Conventional Round: 4 hours and 20 minutes for 18.
Taylormade Round: 1 hour and 20 minutes for 18
That would give Golfers more time to be in shops checking out new Taylormade product.

It’s not a phone… it wouldn’t work and no way would TM will allow that! It’s the same with Apple now. A few months ago they released an iPad (can’t remember the generation now cos it’s been that many and simply can’t keep up!). And now they have released the iPad Air now. It’s a joke seriously.. and people are stupid enough to upgrade every time they’re is a new product out. There won’t be a significant difference every few months. You’re best waiting about 3-4 years to upgrade to new equipment.

People, you are best spending your money on lessons and custom fit your clubs. I upgrade new equipment every 3-4 years. TM have been saying you should gain another so so extra yards the past 8 years – if that was true I would be able to hit a driver over 300 yards.

In fact, you have no idea. SLDR is the replacement for the RBZ Tour line. Smaller heads, adjustable loft and lie aimed at better players. JetSpeed is the replacement for the standard RBZ line designed for mid to high handicaps.

Not even close to the same club. One is a small head and one is large. How is that the same club? They don’t even look the same. Idiot.

I agree totally, TM can’t even wait for the hype to cool down on their latest, greatest, greatest, farthest, best, wow, wow, wow driver with all the slips and slides, LOL now we all have another eye full of there next BS best driver, man when will they relax, and let us play the last driver, they try to push on us.

    Nov 11, 2013 at 1:38 pm

Here’s an idea… don’t buy it! There haven’t been major improvement in golf equipment in 5-10 years. Use the already high quality/ high tech equipment that you have and don’t buy more unless your’s breaks. Even then you should just have it repaired. Spend your money on your local golf course and golf lessons, the things that really matter and what keep the GAME OF GOLF healthy. Club manufactuers are not interested in the quality of golf you play, just making a quick buck today, tomorrow, and definitely for the sales quarter.

People, keep what you have and spend the money on lessons. That will do more for your game than any club you can buy!

What a joke! I wouldnt be caught dead with a TBAG club in my bag, or ball or any of the other junk they sell. I don’t need to hit it further and if I did I wouldn’t need to hit further four times a year. Apparently people don’t want to score better they just want to hit it 53 million miles further into the woods. Drivers are all but maxed out if you’re properly fit. Stop this crap.

I wonder how comparable these will be to the superfast? I wish they had continued the superfast line. I think this “jetspeed” has a 49 gram shaft much like the superfast had a light shaft. I think 50 grams? no sure. I really liked the head design for the original superfast, which i think would be killer with this new “jet steel” and the handlebar speed pocket. I do like how this has a weight port for adjustability however.

Enough already, Taylormade. You are alienating your brand loyalists with your new gimmicks every 3 months. We cannot keep up with it. First you tell us that the white crown helps us with alignment. Now you are back to black crown drivers. You tell us that the revolutionary speed pocket/groove/slit increases ball speed. Then the speed pocket makes room for the sliding weight gimmick (SLDR). Now JetSpeed? What, the clubhead comes fitted with miniature jet engines? Seriously, you are losing all credibility. Your gimmicks have become so transparent that you will lose all your long-time fans/buyers. And then it won’t be long before everybody else figures out your flavor of the month gimmicks are just that–elaborate marketing gimmicks.

TM made a Burner 3.0 exclusively for Dicks Sporting Goods, looked just like the 2.0 but white. I chuckled when I saw it on the shelf but couldn’t find anything about it anywhere.

Wow, they just introduced a SLDR flavored jug of Kool-aid a couple months ago. Now there’s a NEW flavor of Kool-aid! So glad I don’t drink Kool-aid!

I’m pleased that I decided to spend some money on lessons and keep my (3 year) old clubs in the bag. It’s fun beating the Kool-aid drinkers with my old dirty water clubs. 🙂

But Tmag just posted record earning that is certain to make shareholders happy. So luckily for them, there are apparently a TON of people who like new flavors of Kool-aid!

WOT CAN I SAY ANOTHER LINE UP FROM THE No 1 BRAND IN GOLF . IVE HAD A GO ON THE SLDR HYBRID I TESTED IT AGAINST MY RBZ STAGE 2 BOTH STIFF FLEX BOTH 3 WOOD AND TO BE HONEST I WAS SUPRISED HOW NICE THE SLDR FELT OF THE FACE NOT AS LOUD AS THE RBZ 2 BUT BOTH GAVE ME GOOD DISTANCES BUT NOT ENUFF TO DUMP THE STAGE 2 OVER THE SLDR BOTH WAS VERY CLOSE IN NUMBERS. I CAN SEE THIS LINE UP OF NEW WOODS BEING THE SAME AS WOTS OUT NOW APART FROM THEY DO REMIND ME OF SOME OF THE ADAMS GOLF LINE UP WHICH IS OWNED BY TAYLORMADE.

  96. Desmond

    Nov 11, 2013 at 12:51 pm

The shape and rounded sole of the fairways and hybrids reminds me of the XHot lineup, and I consider that a good thing. I thought the Stage 2 went backwards in terms of playability.

If TaylorMade changes the terms of purchasing, new models always generate interest, and more bodies in the door on a year-round basis. I know my club maker is thrilled that Taylormade keeps on introducing product. He remains busy year-round customizing the new product … hot melt, shaft, etc.

I just don’t see how all these metal woods can be different from each other. Enough already TM!!

  105. t

    Nov 11, 2013 at 11:43 am

the saturation of metal woods into the market by Taylormade should speak volumes about the quality of their stuff. This is getting out of control. They are putting retailers out of business…like Edwin Watts, the largest in the southeast, just filed for chapter 11. companies like watts are forced to buy the “new” stuff only for new “new” stuff to come out weeks later (not several months to a year later). now the “new” stuff which is the old stuff goes on sale and most aren’t going to buy the new “new” stuff when the old “new” stuff is cheaper. golf only retailers will be extinct soon.

    • Tom Allinder

      Nov 11, 2013 at 12:01 pm

Good point t… They are publicly traded (acquired by Adidas AG [Germany] – ticker: ADS:GR). This puts a tremendous amount of pressure on management to keep innovating and keep sales growing. Otherwise shareholders will vote with their trading accounts in a negative way. The retailers do not matter; nothing matters except growth, growth and more growth at an ever increasing pace.

    • chowchow

      Nov 11, 2013 at 1:05 pm

Edwin Watts is going out of business because of a poor business plan and manageing by the venture fund capital company that owns them. Edwin Watts was required to stay fully stocked during the down turn in all sections. They could not pare back the slow moving brands. The majority of their outlets are to small. Taylor nor any other OEM helped with Edwin Watts’ decline.

The OEMs want outfits like the PGA Super Stores – Dick’s etc. They want guys like me out of business who will wheel and deal. OEM’s want fixed pricing. They say it is good for the consumer. Places like ebay guys are loosing accounts for selling below MAP(Minimum Advertised Pricing)which is a little bit below MSRP.

I got tired of the BS from Callaway(the worst OEM to deal with) Ping(2nd worst)Titleist – Adams – Taylor(easiest) – Mizuno. Mom and Pop Shops are history. The golf industry is dying. So what do the OEM’s to help.. Nothing.. raise prices to make up for lost sales from the year before. TM will do will over 1.5 billion. That is at least $500 million the 2nd place guy will do(Titleist). The US is 85% of golf sales worldwide. That 85% is down 35% from the peak in 2007.

The big are going to get bigger. More specialtiy guys that charge $200 for a wedge will be history, and I can’t say I will shed a tear for any of them

      • Golfer

        Nov 11, 2013 at 12:11 pm

No it’s a ripoff of the burner line they made how many years ago? Exactly tmag was first

        • N

          Nov 11, 2013 at 4:30 pm

Except it doesn’t look like any recent burners…it looks like an Optiforce.

          • markb

            Dec 31, 2013 at 12:50 am

My first impression was that it looked like an Optiforce as well. But now I have one in my hands and I don’t think they look that similar. Side by side, the Jetspeed looks HUGE. Easily the biggest driver I’ve ever seen. Very flat bottom and the Opti is more classically rounded.

    • Jeff

      Nov 12, 2013 at 1:23 am

Weird, I think it looks more like my old 2007 burner and the Callaway xhot2 looks closer to mizuno.

Q&A: Martin Trainer on his Bobby Grace “Greg Chalmers” putter, 6.5-degree driver, and “butter knife” 2-iron

Published

on

As unbiasedly as I can put it, Martin Trainer has one of the coolest club setups in professional golf. (At some point soon, I’ll put together a top-10 list of “coolest club setups on Tour,” but I know that Trainer will be in the top-10)

What a lineup. He plays a 6.5-degree Wilson prototype driver, a 13-degree Wilson prototype 3-wood, a true blade Wilson Staff Model 2-iron, and a Bobby Grace “Greg Chalmers Commemorative” putter!

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by GolfWRX (@golfwrx)

I mean, look at this 2-iron from address…

To quote the great author R.L. Stine: “Goosebumps.”

On Wednesday at the 2024 Texas Children’s Houston Open, I caught up with Trainer to learn more about his bag setup.

Here’s what he had to say:

You have the Internet going crazy over your bag setup, and your putter. Where’d you pick the Bobby Grace-Greg Chalmers putter up? How long have you had it?

MT: This was from when Bobby Grace came to my course in California: Cal Club. And for whatever reason, they just started having them in the shop. So then I took my buddy’s, started using it, and made, like, a million putts in a row, which is how every putter story begins, I guess.

And then, I bought a couple of my own, used it for years, got to the Tour with it, won on Tour with it (the 2019 Puerto Rico Open). Then, about a year later, started using another putter, did that for a couple years, but now it’s back in the bag.

When did it come back in the bag?

MT: December of this past year. So a few months ago.

What year would you say was the first time you threw that in the bag, or, like, when you bought it?

MT: God…Probably, 2016, maybe? 2018?

Do you remember how much you paid for it?

MT: I don’t know, actually. Maybe $100-150 bucks or something. I think that’s the only golf club I’ve bought between high school and now. Well, two, since I bought two of them.

The driver is interesting, too. What went into the prototyping process?

MT: That was a version of the current driver, but it was the prototype that they first came out with for Tour guys to try. And for whatever reason, I just never switched out to the new one.

It’s just 6.5 degrees, right?

MT: Yeah. Very low loft, yeah.

What kind of ball speed do you have with that these days?

MT: Like high 170’s.

Yeah, that’ll work. And then a 2-iron blade? We’re seeing fewer and fewer of those out here.

MT: Yeah. The butter knife.

Very cool thing to have in the bag. Have you done any testing with driving irons?

MT: Yeah, I used to have a thicker one, but it was a little offset, and I never hit it that well. And then finally, I started messing around with the butter knife. And I remember the first time I looked down at it, I was terrified. And then I ended up getting used to it, putting it in play, and it’s been in place since. It’s a pretty good club for me.

How far do you carry that?

MT: Like 235.

A good little wind club, I’m sure.

MTL Yeah, exactly. I can hit it very low. It’s great.

I love it. You have people shook looking at that. Thanks for the time, man.

MT: Absolutely.
