Open Championship Round 3 Recap
Sergio Garcia leads The Open Championship by three shots after 54 holes. His first 54 hole lead in a major championship. Steve Stricker shot a course record 64 for solo second place. Tiger Woods bopped a women on the noggin and shot 69 to finish eight shots off the pace. Certainly Mr. Garcia is happy to be paired with Mr. Stricker rather than Mr. Woods. His history in that group with Mr. Woods is sorry at best. We’ll see if Mr Garcia’s adoption of the belly putter can cure his final round putting woes and lead him to the podium as The Open Championship.
Sergio Garcia is atop the leaderboard at The Open alone. New territory for the 27 year old Spaniard during a major championship. He’ll be in the final group at The Open for the second straight year. No doubt he’ll not miss last years playing companion Tiger Woods. Instead he finds himself paired with Steve Stricker, whose course record 64 moved him into second place similarly three shots ahead of his nearest competitor.
I am interested to see if Mr. Garcia can avoid the meltdown of last year and continue wielding his belly putter into the winner’s circle. "I’m going to go out there and try to play my own game, just like I’ve been doing every single day, and just believe in myself as much as possible," Garcia said. "That’s what I did on Thursday, that’s what I did most parts of Friday and that’s what I did today. If I’m in control, the way I’m hitting the ball, it’s right there for the taking. Hopefully, it will be good enough."
As for Mr. Stricker, "It was just one of those rounds where everything kind of went right," Stricker said. "It was quite a day. It was quite an experience. It was a lot of fun, and it gives myself a chance going into tomorrow." Ha! A lot of fun! I imagine shooting a 64 during The Open Championship could be understated as being a lot of fun. Mr. Striker has long been one of the best putters on Tour, even when he couldn’t hit the ball straight. As last year’s Comeback Player of the Year, he’s carried over his stellar play into this year. Seemingly he plays his best on the hardest courses, sharing the lead on the back nine on Sunday at Oakmont before a pair of double bogies sent him out of the chase.
As for Mr. Woods, he’s eight shots behind, a total he’s only overcome once in his career, the 1998 Johnnie Walker Classic in Thailand. Mr. Woods managed to bean a 63 year old woman leaving her bandaged and bleeding in shooting a 69. "I’ve got to be playing a little better than I have been, that’s for sure," Woods said. "But at least I gave myself a chance going into tomorrow. Paul [Lawrie] came from 10 back in ’99. Certainly, you can do it around this golf course." And no one familiar with Mr. Woods’ game doubts he’s capable of matching or bettering Mr. Stricker’s new course record.
Sunday morning in the States will bring us a final pairing of Mr. Garcia, he of the magnificent ball striking and questionable putting, and Mr. Stricker, he of the magnificent putting and questionable ball striking. My brain tells me Mr. Garcia will stagger and stumble only enough to make it interesting. My gut tells me Mr. Stricker will benefit from his stellar putting and some characteristic quakiness on the greens by Mr. Garcia. I’ll trust my gut and say Mr. Stricker by a shot, especially if the weather gets foul. Enjoy!
