Poulter sends tweet, receives putters

Poulter with Odyssey 7

File the following under “Only in the Web 2.0 World” or “Only Ian Poulter.”

As you may have heard, Ian Poulter is banishing his Odyssey XG No. 7 putter to the garage. For the upcoming Open Championship, the two-time winner on the PGA Tour wants a new flatstick.

And rather than talking to Scotty Cameron, Poulter took to Twitter to ask for a new flatstick.

Not surprisingly, the putters have poured in for Poults. Some two days later, he tweeted the following photo.

Perhaps Poulter should go the route of his fellow Brit-turned-Floridian, Lee Westwood. Westwood reached out to his South Florida neighbor Ian Baker Finch for some putting tips ahead of the upcoming Open Championship.

Then again, maybe the proprietor of IJP Design ought to design himself a putter in plaid, as that’s the “look” he tends to favor.

What do you think GolfWRX-ers? Was Poulter’s plea a pro move? Brilliant? Deplorable? The best way to get himself the putter that’s going to win his first major?

Should he stick with the Odyssey XG No. 7, which served him so well in the Ryder Cup?

Do you care if he putts with the double-sided rubber contraption from a mini-golf course?

When did Bettinardi become a small putter company?!

I bet they don,t even come close to taylormade and odyssey sales. you could count the players on tour using them on one hand.

Dang I was hoping a small company would get some exposure from him playing their product like piretti edel or bettinardi. not taylormade and odyssey

Actually not a new idea…Lee Trevino did this in an newspaper interview after a poor putting performance in a US Open. He got somewhere around 50 putters including one from my former boss. He never got a response or a thanks, so at least IP had the decency to thank his benefactors.

Ian, please send me the putters you do not choose to use, thanks in advance.

Sent IJP a tweet about Bobby Grace. I can honestly say that there hasn’t been another putter in my bag since 2006. Weighing over 500g, the higher the Stimp, the better I putt. Helped Nick Price win The Open…maybe more magic could happen for someone else.

    Attn: Bettinardi and Scotty Cameron-

I currently use a Snake Eyes TX1 putter and my putting is so good that people always want to know what kind of putter I use.

Send me one of each of your putter models from the past ten years and I will test them out and endorese whichever one works best.

    Thank you.

Instead of asking others, spending time looking on sites, and generally wasting time, he went right to the heart of the matter: “I don’t have time to look, and I’m sure I’ll miss something, so if you want me to sample your goods then send em’ over”.

I wish I had that kinda pull!

Go for the Taylormade Daddy Long Legs putter. The counterbalancing is something unbelievable, just talk to Justin Rose about his blade version.

Poulter is a great guy! Wish him the best.

Agree with Taylor…he is that “different” sort that the game needs, both in appearance, swagger and access. His reaching-out to companies and fans is truly how all professional athletes should engage their followers…it begins to break down the thick glass wall that separates them from us…the perfect end to this story would be that Poulty selects a putter from a fan and goes on to win at Muirfield.

The guy has marginal ability but has turned it into fame and fortune. A classic overachiever.

Hopefully he won’t be selfish and he will donate these putters to a good cause. It is a bit sickening that he needs so many putters sent to his house when he has the full compliment of the companies tour facilities at his disposal every week. Literally thousands of free putters can be found at any PGA tour stop each week…

That’s who he is. Personally I might have been a bit more under the radar, but hey, that’s Ian.

Hadn’t heard of Radius until now. They look pretty intriguing. Will read more.

It’s just Poulter being Poulter, love him or hate him, he is always just himself!

I think it’s brilliant and saves his manager work. He’ll get a ton of putters, and maybe some small company will get lucky and have him use their’s to success. And knowing Poults, he’ll give away those he doesn’t want! Hope he wins a lot soon, he’s my favourite guy on tour.

Poults loves social media! I think it’s funny and an interesting way to do it. Only a titleist player or tour rep on twitter might see what scotty says but I don’t see him sending him putters to try. Poor poults is going to have a lot of angry tweeters I bet

I thinks it’s pretty awesome that he can make that happen. I sure wish I could have that easy of a time getting a putter. Heck he got faster response from those club makers than I do from my wife when it comes to golf.

Love the Radius Roll putter already!! I just won it at a golf outing & I’m already practicing in my living room. Awesome concept! Also, it’s a local Chicago company with some great people!

Reminds me of the old TearDrop putters. How would you compare your putters to those? BTW…the center shafted putters look great. IMHO they are a bit expensive right out of the gate but they look nice.
